With J.J. Abrams busy rebooting/continuing another sci-fi classic… Star Wars… Heard of it? A new director will need to be hired to helm the upcoming Star Trek 3. While a shortlist of directors are being discussed, the first contender to be named is Joe Cornish.
Cornish was the writer/director of the well-received alien invasion flick Attack the Block. He also penned the screenplays for The Adventures of Tin Tin, and the upcoming Ant-Man.
It’s a risky move as Cornish doesn’t have experience with a movie of this caliber, the budget on Attack the Block was only $13 million. Star Trek 3 will obviously have a budget upwards of $100 million like the first two installments. However, this unconventional method worked well for Iron Man 3. The director of that movie, Shane Black, only had one previous directorial credit to his name, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, and handled the big-budget superhero movie like a pro.
With Star Trek 3 in the very early stages of development, this is only speculation at this point, but his name is being tossed around. Paramount Pictures plans to have the film ready for release by 2016, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the TV show.
What do you think about Joe Cornish taking over the wheel of the Enterprise? Who else would you want to see take a stab at Star Trek 3?
