Last month we heard that Marvel were considering making a few smaller superhero films with budgets ranging from $20 to 40 million. This would allow them to expand their film universe without having to spend $150 million with each outing. It’s also quite a logical route, as not every character needs a blockbuster-sized budget.
One of the projects suggested was a Luke Cage movie, and now a recent report suggests that Marvel is in the process of developing a movie based on the street fighter.
From The L.A Times:
Speaking of Luke Cage, a.k.a. Power Man, I hear that there’s more talk underway about putting the urban hero into his own film and that a notable Hollywood star is now having (very) preliminary talks with Marvel Studios about the property and its potential.
Back in 2004 Boyz n the Hood director John Singleton was attached to direct a Luke Cage movie, with Tyrese Gibson (Transformers) interested in playing the title role. As that was 6 years ago both may have moved on, so Marvel may be looking for a new director/actor combo to introduce Cage to the big screen.
For those unfamiliar with Luke Cage he was an exceptional street fighter and a gifted athlete in the comics who gained superhuman strength and stamina as a result of his participation in dangerous, and highly controversial, experiments while in prison. Back in 2004 producer Avi Arad stated that he hoped Luke Cage would be “brutal enough” for an R rating and that it would have an urban vibe. Hopefully Marvel has similar plans today.
Who do you think should play Luke Cage?
