Welcome to second edition of The Weekly Trailer Round-Up. Notice the snazzy new logo? You likie? Me likie. Anyway, each week, I’ll be bringing you the new trailers that debuted and my thoughts on them. Enjoy.

REVOLVER

Director: Guy Ritchie
Starring: Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Vincent Pastore
Trailer: Click Here
Summary: Gambler and conman Jake Green becomes unbeatable at the tables using a formula for the ultimate con that he learned from two mysterious prisoners. Now he is ready to take his revenge against Dorothy Macha, the man responsible for his jail time.
Prognosis: I didn’t even hear about this film until I saw the trailer. I was definitely impressed by it. Very distinct style and a very interesting concept. For something that I went into blind, I definitely want to see this. The only thing I didn’t like is that Ray Liotta looks like he’s plastic. Seriously. Giving it an A.

MAJOR MOVIE STAR

Director: Steve Miner
Starring: Jessica Simpson, Vivica A. Fox, Steve Guttenberg, Ryan Sypek, Cheri Oteri
Trailer: Click Here
Summary: A pampered movie-star joins the Army in a moment of weakness, but soon realizes she’s in over her head.
Prognosis: I don’t know. I couldn’t even get it to load for me. Maybe you guys can have better luck? Based on that assumption, I was going to give it a D, but the promo still I found boosted it up to a C-.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS

Director: Tim Hill
Starring: Jason Lee, Cameron Richardson, Jane Lynch
Trailer: Click Here
Summary: Jason Lee will star as David Seville in the CG/live-action hybrid film, based on the 1950s cartoon series about chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore, who lay waste to Seville’s surroundings and sing in three-part harmony.
Prognosis: Uhh…Why? I may have loved this as a kid, but I don’t see it standing the test of time. And the fact that they are ACTUALLY the size of chipmunks totally changes things. I like Jason Lee…but not this much. Kids will love it, I’m sure, but us grown-up kids will likely stay away. C.

SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET

Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Sacha Baron Cohen
Trailer: Click Here
Summary: Depp stars as Sweeney Todd, a man unjustly sent to prison who vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. When he returns to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who “shaved the heads of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard from again.”
Prognosis: This is a new trailed that played during a Spike TV awards show. This trailer focuses more on the ‘revenge’ aspect of the film, and it looks fantastic. I really can’t wait to see this movie. I think people are going to be surprised at the amount of singing. Most of the trailers are very misleading, downplaying the musical aspect. However, this still looks awesome. Also, god damn it, I want that poster. Badly. A.

VALKYRIE

Director: Bryan Singer
Starring: Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy
Trailer: Click Here
Summary: Severely wounded in combat, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg returns from Africa to join the German Resistance and help create Operation Valkyrie, the complex plan that will allow a shadow government to replace Hitler’s once he is dead. But fate and circumstance conspire to thrust Stauffenberg from one of many in the plot to a double-edged central role. Not only must he lead the coup and seize control of his nation’s government… He must kill Hitler himself.
Prognosis: Say what you want about Tom Cruise, this film, and Bryan Singer. This trailer has sold me. I’m a sucker for war movies, especially those set in WW2. Even though Crusie’s German accent is virtually non-existant (as it is with most of the other actors in the film), I’m still interested. The only thing I didn’t like was that it said ‘From The Director of X-Men and Superman Returns.’ The Usual Suspects, I can understand. However, this movie is definitely not aimed at the super-hero crowd, so I’m not quite sure why they are selling the film on those points. Regardless, I’m liking the vibe from this film so far. A.

That’s all for this week! See ya next Monday!
