One of the things that ruined the movie The Golden Compass was it's ridiculously shortened running time. Some films suit 90 minutes but others suit 3 hours and over. When your establishing a world that is different from ours (like it is in Watchmen or Lord of the Rings or The Golden Compass) you need time to draw your audience into that world, then pile on top of that the intricacies of the plot and character development, a movie like this should be over 3 hours. 2h 35m isn't a short film by any means but to get the full effect, you want as much as possible. After all, nobody want's a film that's all exposition. Damn Fox.

Mmm, I totally agree. If you're attention span is too short for a 3 hours movie, stay home.

Ditto on the death top the narrow minds. Short movies are good but longer movies are better.

I agree to you both. The Return of the King was one of my favourite movies ever, and I love the Extended version even more which bumps it up to nearly (perhaps even over) 4 hours.

I have to agree with the previous post; three hours, ten minutes is a fine movie length if the movie is good enough. People LIKE long films if the script can live up to it. Just look at The Lord of the Rings.

What is this obsession with making films short?
