Warner Bros Filmonic Image Awards season is getting closer and it’s the time of year when studios have a look at their slate and see which movies may be in contention for some statues. Warner Bros. have just launched their For Your Consideration page and with The Gangster Squad and The Great Gatsby now 2013 releases, the studio will be focusing on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Cloud Atlas, Argo, and The Dark Knight Rises.

Here are the movies and their categories:

We’re still 2 months away until our return to Middle Earth so Warner Bros. may include some technical categories in the near future such as VFX and Make-Up, but these are the core ones at the moment. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King cleaned up at the Oscars in 2004 with 11 wins, so it’ll be interesting so see how The Hobbit trilogy is treated in the statues department.

Ben Affleck’s directing efforts continue to win over critics but Gone Baby Gone and The Town share only 2 Oscar nods between them, both in supporting acting categories. Argo may be different as it’s already an early contender for Best Picture and Director, and the acting categories look strong too.

Cloud Atlas has already been mentioned as a likely contender for VFX, Make-up, and Editing, but whether it aims for one of the big 5 will depend on its reception upon release. Three directors will surely cause some problems in regards to rules and restrictions for Best Director, and due to the film being a large ensemble the acting categories may not be as strong compared to other films. Cloud Atlas will be an interesting one to follow.

Warner Bros. were always going to give The Dark Knight Rises a push come awards season, even though The Dark Knight was better received by critics. Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway are regulars at award ceremonies, but it’s unlikely they’ll receive nominations for this film. Bale has played Batman three times now, and Hathaway is more likely to get recognition for Les Misérables (probably why the studio put her in Best Actress so as to avoid Hathaway competing with herself in Supporting).

Which of these films do you think has a shot at some awards?
