Last month it looked like Vin Diesel would be involved in an upcoming Marvel movie. Some speculated Thanos or an android called Vision, however it has been confirmed that Diesel will be voicing Groot, a talking tree who can absorb wood and control trees.
From The L.A Times:
Hero Complex: OK, so why Groot?
Vin Diesel: I’m an actor. I can do whatever the … I want. As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of superhuman and extra-terrestrial adventurers dedicated to the safeguarding of the Milky Way Galaxy from any force that threatens the security or liberty of its various people.
The team includes their leader Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer (a resurrected superhuman warrior and nemesis of Thanos), Groot (a plant monster who can control trees), Gamora (a dangerous female assassin who has a preference for knives and swords) and Rocket Racoon (a genetically altered racoon who can fly a plane and carries a laser pistol).
Diesel joins a cast that includes Chris Pratt as Star Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, and Dave Bautista as Drax. James Gunn is directing, and the film opens August 2014.
