Disney today announced that it plans to release at least fifteen films on 3D Blu-ray throughout 2011. The movies, many of which are classics, include The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Bolt and Tangled. Also on the list is Tron Legacy which is still on screens making money at the box office (albeit not as much as Disney would like).
As I type its total worldwide gross stands at $240.9 million, but as Deadline points out that’s still not enough yet to cover the cost of making the movie ($170M) or marketing it worldwide ($120M). There is still another $100 million or so left in it, but whether we see a sequel or not will probably depend on the DVD/Blu-ray sales. Disney had writers working on a sequel script since April, and it would be a shame to see those plans tossed aside (but only if they learn from their Legacy mistakes, the next film would need a better story, ideally).
With the announcement today it is clear Disney already has release plans for Tron Legacy on DVD, Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray, and according to UK DVD rental site LOVEFiLM the release date is currently set for April 11th. That could just be ‘pencilled in’ date at the moment, but with Disney looking to close the gap between the theatrical release and DVD release April is looking likely.
