When you see ultra wide lens and weird camera angles, you know you’re looking at a Terrence Malick movie. Song to Song is a very Terrence Malick film.
“In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye and BV, and music mogul Cook and the waitress whom he ensnares — chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.”
The Thin Red Line and The Tree of Life director/writer has a very distinct style that unfortunately doesn’t always compliment his films. His previous feature, Knight of Cups, while very beautiful to look at, is probably best forgotten. Now there’s a chance Song to Song is more of that, but let’s hope that’s not the case. The fact it was shot back-to-back with Knight of Cups is not exactly filling me with confidence.
As is almost always the case with his movies, Terrence Malick both wrote and directed Song to Song. The filmmaker gathered quite the ensemble cast for this, including Ryan Gosling (again playing a musician), Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Val Kilmer, Holly Hunter, Benicio Del Toro and Haley Bennett.
Song to Song will have its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 10th. A week later, March 17th, Song to Song opens in select theaters in the US.
