Simply called Flatliners, it’s really more a reimagining of the 1990 film that also happens to take place in the same universe, with a certain character making a return.
“Medical students experiment on “near death” experiences that involve past tragedies until the dark consequences begin to jeopardize their lives.”
Everything shown in the trailer screams remake and if it wasn’t for Keifer Sutherland being credited as Nelson, which is the same character he played in the 1990 Flatliners, I would not know this is a sequel. I’m sure it will play out almost exactly like the first film and at some point towards the end they will find out that many years before another group of medical students did the same kind of experiments (or maybe they already know about those and are trying to replicate them). In comes Nelson with some words of wisdom that will definitely be completely disregarded by the new students and then someone ends up dead, for good. Here’s hoping I’m wrong and there’s a bit more to this reimagining of Flatliners.
Niels Arden Oplev directed the new Flatliners (Joel Schumacher helmed the original) and Ben Ripley wrote the screenplay. Starring in the remake/sequel are Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Kiersey Clemons, Kiefer Sutherland, Nina Dobrev and more.
Flatliners opens September 29th in the US, more than 27 years after the first film.
