A title like Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie assumes there will be a 2nd installment, which might be a bit of a stretch in this case.
“Two imaginative elementary school students, George Beard and Harold Hutchins, hypnotize their arrogant principal, Mr. Krupp, into becoming the dim-witted superhero known as Captain Underpants, created by George and Harold. Together, they set out on a journey to stop the mad scientist Professor Poopypants from threatening the world.”
Okay, maybe I’m too harsh with Captain Underpants, I’m sure there are plenty out there looking forward to seeing it. But at the same time it’s pretty obvious that one of the main reasons this movie even got made is so DreamWorks Animation can fulfill their distribution deal with Fox (this will be their last animation under them, moving to Universal for good starting in 2019). Basically when the studio reorganized in 2015 it was decided that Captain Underpants would not be produced in-house, instead Mikros Image (The Little Prince) would take the reins. Why? Because it was significantly cheaper. It was either that or cancellation, at least this way fans of the property get a hopefully decent movie.
David Soren (Turbo) directed the animation while the screenplay was penned by Nicholas Stoller based on the series of children’s novels of the same name by Dav Pilkey. Voicing some of the characters are Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Jordan Peele, Kristen Schaal and Nick Kroll.
Captain Underpants will be out in the US starting June 2nd.
