We’re talking about trailers released anywhere from January 1st and up to now. These are of course my personal picks, my favorite movie trailers of 2016.
The trailers are in no particular order and I’m sure I’ve probably forgotten more than a couple fantastic ones (which probably says more about those trailers than about me), so please don’t hold it against me if X trailer for Y movie is not among these 5. I could have gone for 10 instead, sure, but it turns out that’s a lot harder (and I don’t just mean the extra work).
Suicide Squad Official Trailer 1, released on January 19th.
Of course this one would make its way on here, it was an incredible trailer that’s probably partially responsible for turning Suicide Squad into a box office hit on the same level as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. And yes, this trailer wouldn’t be as great without Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. At the same time they made fantastic use of it, they didn’t just throw Bohemian Rhapsody over whatever finished footage they had lying around. Sadly the finished movie didn’t quite live up to the promise of this trailer.
Logan Official Trailer 1, released October 20th.
Arguably (I dare you to argue with me) the best trailer of 2016. Going into it we knew Logan would be the last Wolverine movie, inspired by the Old Man Logan story, and that it would carry an R rating (thanks Deadpool). I guess we had an idea what all of that could look like, but then this trailer came out and left everyone in awe. I included this version of the trailer instead of the red band one because in my opinion it just flows better. As cool as that one scene was on its own, it didn’t fit with the rest of the trailer, and actually took me out just before a pivotal moment. I know I said these trailers are in no particular order, but if I had to chose my number 1, it would absolutely be the first official trailer for Logan.
Ghost in the Shell Official Trailer 1, release November 13th.
This inclusion might come as a surprise to some, but I really really liked the Ghost in the Shell trailer. As something of a fan of the 1995 anime, I couldn’t wait to watch this trailer so I could start ripping apart everything in it. Obviously that didn’t go as planned and I ended up doing a 180. They actually made a live-action Ghost in the Shell, a live-action anime. Now don’t get me wrong, the movie could still suck, but right now, based on this trailer, Ghost in the Shell looks incredible.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Teaser Trailer, released December 3rd.
I thought the first teaser for Guardians Vol. 2 was just okay, which was certainly disappointing considering how great the teaser for the first Guardians was. Well they completely course corrected with this one. It’s all there, the action, the humor, the music, and it makes me even more excited for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (if that’s even possible).
Blade Runner 2049 Announcement Trailer, released December 19th.
Between having to live up to the Blade Runner name and it being a sequel released 35 years later, the first teaser trailer for Blade Runner 2049 had to really make an impression. Sure, there’s not a lot happening there, but it shows enough to get fans excited. What really pushed this into my top 5 was the overall tone. Between this and Ghost in the Shell, 2017 could be a good year for cyberpunk. Now if only CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 was also coming next year. It really won’t, but I can still dream.
Tomorrow I’ll give you my 10 most anticipated movies of 2017 while on December 31st we’ll talk about my favorite features of 2016. I can tell you right now at least one superhero movie will be on that list, maybe even two. And of course something in a galaxy far, far away. Oh and aliens that love to draw weird circles.
