A few weeks ago it was announced that director Kenneth Branagh had cast Tom Hiddleston as Loki in Marvel’s Thor. Today we have some quotes from the actor himself as he spoke briefly to The Daily Mail about the role and what it will involve:
‘Loki’s like a comic book version of Edmund in King Lear, but nastier,’ Tom observed. How much nastier? ‘Well, Loki’s skilled in black magic and scorcery. He’s a shape-shifter and has all sorts of super powers from the dark arts. He can turn clouds into dragons, things like that.’
Between now and January, when Thor begins shooting, Tom has to keep himself fit and healthy. ‘Ken wants Loki to have a lean and hungry look, like Cassius in Julius Caesar. Physically, he can’t be posing as Thor.’
We also have some reassuring quotes from writer Ashley Miller who spoke to CineFOOLS. He says that the “script is very firmly rooted in the Marvel film world” and that they were “constantly looking for ways to connect Thor to the other movies and heroes”. He also had this to say about what he would like to bring to the Thor character:
Not in the sense that you’d want to see a generic “dark” take on Thor, but in the sense that you want to feel Thor’s rage when he rages. You want to see him fight like hell, and take as much he dishes out — maybe more. You want to have a visceral reaction to the guy, and what happens to him. You don’t want his adventures to be clean and antiseptic. You want to see the dirt, and grime and blood. You want to feel every bone crunching moment of every fight. And when he unleashes the storm, you want to feel like you’re seeing the power of a GOD at work.
Please excuse me while I change my lower body clothing. This sounds like it is going to be epic. Thor is a tricky character to translate onto the big screen as he lives in a very different world. Writing the script must have been a challenge, however it seems like Miller, the writers, and Kenneth Branagh know what they are doing.
Filming will begin in January, which should give Chris Hemsworth enough time to get physically ready to play the Thunder God, and Tom Hiddleston enough time to look lean and hungry.
