According to Production Weekly (via The Playlist) Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, James McAvoy, Ian McKellen, and Natalie Portman have all been offered roles in Cloud Atlas, to be directed by Run Lola Run director Tom Tykwer.
Tykwer revealed at the beginning of last year that he was working on adapting the novel with The Wachowskis, and he seems to have completed it as the aim is to begin filming in early 2011.
So what is Cloud Atlas about?
The story presents six narratives that evoke an array of genres, from Melvillean high-seas drama to California noir and dystopian fantasy. There is a naive clerk on a nineteenth-century Polynesian voyage: and aspiring composer who insinuates himself to the home of a syphilitic genius: a journalist investigating a nuclear plant: a publisher with a dangerous best-seller on his hands: and a cloned human being created for slave labour. These five stories are bisected and arranged around a sixth, the oral history of a post-apocalyptic island, which forms the heart of the story.
This sounds rather amazing. Some have said the book is un-filmable as it spans thousands of years and over several genres, but if Tykwer can pull it off it should be quite something.
The cast mentioned above have only been offered roles and nobody is confirmed so far, but I hope everyone signs on. Three past and present X-Men actors, Evey Hammond, and Forest Gump. Who wouldn’t be interested in seeing all those in the same sci-fi movie?
