When Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol made nearly $700 million worldwide last year we knew Ethan Hunt’s adventures were far from over. Today Deadline reports that “Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have set Tom Cruise in a deal to star in and produce a fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise”.
The return of Tom Cruise is no surprise to anyone, it’s his franchise after all, but there is one question mark surrounding who will direct. Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird ruled himself out, saying “part of one of the successes of the franchises is that they’re always reassessing it with a new director”. Attention then turned to Christopher McQuarrie who recently directed Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher. That film was at Paramount and was relatively successful ($216 million worldwide) so you can see why McQuarrie would be a natural choice.
No word on a start or release date, or even who’s writing the script, but there’s a chance some of the supporting players such as Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg may be involved again.
