Jon Schnepp (Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse) has taken to Kickstarter to appeal for funding to make a documentary about Tim Burton’s failed Superman reboot.
The failed project, Superman Lives, was based on a screenplay written by Kevin Smith, and had comic book aficionado Nicolas Cage attached to star in the leading role. This was widely regarded as an unusual choice for such an iconic character, especially as this incarnation revolved around a flightless Superman.
For years it was the talk of Tinsel Town, and after his successful reinvention of Batman it seemed only logical for Tim Burton to turn his gothic-inspired attentions to the Man of Steel himself.
Here’s Jon Schnepp’s Kickstarter pitch:
The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? is a Feature Length Documentary about the unmade movie “Superman Lives”. This film, out of all the various attempts to make a Superman movie between 1987 and 2006, would have stood the test of time and become a bonafide Cult Classic nowadays. I am not alone with my intense interest in knowing everything I can about this project, and so now I’m embarking on making a Documentary that will cover everything ever made for this film, from interviewing as many people as I can who were involved, to including actually recreating scenes from the script!!!
Superman is arguably the most popular superhero of all time and although this film would have likely been an initial success, it would undoubtedly have become quickly dated, similarly to Burton’s Batman movies. Nicolas Cage, although a very talented actor, is incredibly inconsistent and his awful interpretation of Ghost Rider, suggests that the project’s failure to go into production was a victory in itself.
In 2006, Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, starring Brandon Routh as Superman and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, was met with a mixed critical and commercial response. This lead to widespread disappointment that such an iconic superhero was failing to achieve the success that was being enjoyed by lesser characters.
On 14th June 2013, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill, is due to be released, and many believe that this will be the truest representation of Superman to date. The movie also stars Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon and Kevin Costner.
