Disney has announced that it will be releasing Gore Verbinski’s Lone Ranger on December 21, 2012. The Social Network actor Armie Hammer will play the title character, with Johnny Depp playing the Ranger’s Native American companion Tonto.
The release date means it will be going up against The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which will be released on December 14, 2012. Sherlock Holmes still managed to pull in the crowds despite Avatar dominating in December 2009, so The Lone Ranger shouldn’t have a problem even though The Hobbit will be the event movie of the month.
Here’s the synopsis for the old draft of the script written by Pirates scribes Ted Elliott’s and Terry Rossio’s, although new writer Justin Haythe may have re-written it or just started anew:
The Texas Rangers chase down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish, but the gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.
Filming will begin later this year.
