Cannes Film Festival organisers have confirmed that Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby will open the 66th Cannes Film Festival, according to Deadline. The director’s 3D film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel is scheduled to screen out of competition on 15th May 2013.
Here’s what Baz Lurhmann had to say on the news:
“We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts, not only because my first film Strictly Ballroom was screened there 21 years ago but also because F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside St. Raphael.”
Here’s a brief synopsis:
Nick Carraway, a Midwesterner now living on Long Island, finds himself fascinated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. He is drawn into Gatsby’s circle, becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy.
The Great Gatsby stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, along with Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Tobey Maguire and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki. The film is due for release in the US on 10th May and in the UK on 17th May 2013.
