Since its inception in 1948 the Directors Guild of America has only disagreed with the Academy six times regarding the best director of the year. Hence, if you’re going to place bets on the Best Director Oscar, you’d be wise to take a hint from the DGA.
This year’s big DGA winner is Tom Hooper, the director of The King’s Speech, which seems to be gaining huge momentum as we near the Academy Awards. No more than a few weeks ago most were predicting David Fincher (The Social Network) to nab the big prize. The scales appear to have tipped.
For all of you who are trying to foresee the Oscar’s Best Picture winner, there is an awful lot of overlap between Best Director and Best Picture. In the past 20 years the Best Director has also won Best Picture 15 times.
