When The Avengers assembled last month at Comic-Con the only member of the human race representing the XX chromosome was Scarlett Johansson, who will once again play Black Widow. Director Joss Whedon is known for creating strong female roles after Buffy and Dollhouse, so will he only be able to work his magic on Black Widow in the film?
In a recent interview with The Sunday Herald-Sun (via MovieHole) Whedon suggested that while “it is true that the movie is only going to have one female Avenger…she will not be the only female character”. This could mean we see Gwyneth Paltrow again as Pepper Potts, although Natalie Portman said at Comic-Con she will only play Thor’s love interest Jane Foster in future Thor sequels, and hasn’t signed for The Avengers.
Captain America will likely be frozen so his female Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) may be left in the past, and I imagine The Hulk will have a lot to deal with so Betty Ross (last played by Liv Tyler) probably won’t be appearing. Any Marvel fans have an idea which other female characters could be in the film?
In the interview the director also discussed the plot, which he says would incorporate a number of different Avengers stories:
“It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. You really have to cull from the original and The Ultimates, which is one of The Avengers titles.”
The Avengers will begin filming early next year for a May 2012 release.
