Last summer Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 set a new opening record in the US with $169.2 million. Well early figures suggest Marvel’s The Avengers has done the seemingly impossible by shattering that record with an estimated $200.3 million at the US box office this weekend from 4,349 locations.
The Avengers has been open overseas for the past week and has now accumulated $441.5 million which, adding the US opening, brings the worldwide total to $641.8 million. That’s just in 12 days of release. Iron Man 2 had the highest global box office of the Marvel films with $624 million, but The Avengers has already eclipsed that figure.
As well as the US the movie had the biggest opening weekend of all time in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Central America, Peru, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Philippines.
Next stop, $1 billion!
