the avengers box office Image Walt Disney Pictures has announced that The Avengers sequel will be released on May 1, 2015. We heard last week that Joss Whedon will return to write and direct, and with the cast already signed, The Avengers superheroes are ready to go (after they’ve got their solo movies out of the way).

Here’s the press release from Marvel Studios and Disney:

SEQUEL TO MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS TO HIT THEATERS MAY 1, 2015

The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the biggest Super Hero blockbuster and third highest grossing film of all time, Marvel’s The Avengers. Joss Whedon returns to write and direct the UNTITLED MARVEL’S AVENGERS SEQUEL set for release May 1, 2015.

The announcement means we can now add The Avengers 2 to the list of confirmed Marvel movies set for release over the next few years – otherwise known as “Phase 2″. Considering The Avengers has made nearly $1.5 billion worldwide it was only a matter of time before we got solid information on the sequel.

Here’s a run-down of Marvel’s upcoming slate:

  • Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013
  • Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014
  • Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014
  • The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015

We’re certainly going to get our fair dose of The Avengers superheroes between now and 2015, and that doesn’t include other comic book properties such as X-Men (The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Plot details for The Avengers sequel are unknown, but Whedon has previously said that he would want a sequel to be “smaller. More personal. More painful. By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself.”

So glad that Joss Whedon is back, I think GOTG will somehow set up Thanos even more so for Avengers 2
