Disney certainly doesn’t wait around. Deadline reports that the studio has closed a deal with Terry Rossio to write the script for Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Rossio has co-written all of the Pirates films with his writing partner Ted Elliott, but will be going it alone this time (no reason was given as to why).
Earlier today Johnny Depp said “as long as we can put all the puzzle pieces together, I would most definitely consider” returning for a fifth film, and Deadline says that the actor “has a deal structure to return for a fifth film that will clearly be drawn up for him to reprise Jack Sparrow, though it’s too early to consider him locked.” Disney are also interested in bringing On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall back, which means they must be more than happy with his first outing on the high seas.
It may be too early to tell whether Geoffrey Rush will return as Barbossa or Penélope Cruz as Angelica, but we will probably find out in May. Sam Claflin and Astrid Berges-Frisbey who play Philip and Syrena the mermaid look set to become the new ‘Will and Elizabeth’ if the shot of them looking fondly at each other in the trailer is anything to go by. Falling in love with a mermaid who turns into a monster below water should provide some material for future films. Maybe even a rom-com style spin-off? (Don’t give them ideas!).
