Terry Gilliam Says Ledger’s Oscar Buzz Is A Publicity Stunt

by Liam on July 16, 2008 · Comments

Terry Gilliam, director of Heath Ledger’s last film The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus has said speculation that he will win a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker is simply a publicity stunt.

“That’s what Warner Brothers are saying, but they’ll do anything to publicise their film. That’s just what they do and you can’t get upset because it’s bulls**t.

“They’re like a great white shark which devours whatever it can.”

I suppose he could be right, movie studios will take advantage of any situation to get more green. However, Sir Michael Caine recently said he thinks Ledger deserves an Oscar, is he part of the PR campaign too? Or does Terry Gilliam want Ledger to get an Oscar nod for his role in The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus instead?

Mr. Gilliam might want to consider the fact that several critics, and I emphasize several, are also saying the same about a possible Oscar nod for Ledger. Are they, too, a part of this big conspiracy to generate more funding for The Dark Knight? If Terry can ever produce a movie worthy of an Oscar, then, and only then, can he run his mouth.

Terry Gilliam your an idiot. I have lost all respect for you now. Heath Ledger should be nominated and should win a Oscar. Just because he died an ruined your movie doesn't mean you should hate on him.

I agree with you completely. That makes me so angry. Heath Ledger and all the actors and crew members worked the best and hardest they could for this movie. This movie deserves every oscar possible! It's not just an action superhero, comic book flick. It possesses an intelligent and haunting vibe. It has depth and mystery. This movie was perfect in every way.

He's just pissed that his movie isn't getting as much attention as this The Dark Knight.
Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight was possibly the best onscreen performance since Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, no joke.

Ledger didn't comicbook villain, he delivered a character whose place in pop culture will be remembered for years to come. The hype surrounding The Joker doesn't simply spawn from the fact that it's Heath Ledger, it spawns from the freaky realism of the character, and how our society feels about terrorism,
