Following the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine there was talk of a potential Gambit spin-off, much like what 20th Century Fox and Ryan Reynolds are planning to do with Deadpool (which now has a director).
We haven’t heard anything on a Gambit solo movie since, and in a recent interview Taylor Kitsch confirmed he hadn’t heard anything either, but would still be interested in making it.
“There were strong rumors a while ago, but I haven’t heard or seen anything tangible anyways,” he told them in response. “I know if we do it, it’ll probably be down the road and we’ll do it hopefully a lot darker. I’d love to play him again, but it’s a matter of doing it right, too. There’s no point in just doing it for the sake of doing it. You gotta kill if you’re going to do it, so we’ll see.”
Personally I didn’t think Gambit had a large enough role in Wolverine to warrant his own spin-off, but Taylor Kitsch will be seen in John Carter of Mars and Battleship next year, which could potentially make him the next Sam Worthington (i.e. Not that well known, but then within the space of a new months he’s leading two franchises). Fox may decide to get the ball rolling on a Gambit solo movie if Kitsch’s popularity rises next year.
