Tangled ruled over an otherwise tame weekend where only holdovers had anything to say. It’s already a tradition that the post-thanksgiving weekends are the worst of the holiday season, so in the words of Zack Galifianakis in Due Date, “it’s all uphill from here”, more after the break.
It’s not easy for a movie to open in second and then manage to come in first a week after, but almost no competition and a good hold greatly increase the chances of something like that happening. Anyway, Tangled made $21.6 million for $98.8 million so far in 14 days and it should hit the $100 million mark today, its 15th day. $144 million worldwide so far is a good number but considering the overly long production that was riddled with a bunch of restarts (the current and final version we got in theaters is said to have been the third one, previous ones were scrapped) that brought the budget to a staggering $260 million (only the second most expensive movie of all time), it will be very hard for this to bring back profit during its box office run.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 was 2nd with $17 million and is now at $246.9 million in North America and a grand total of $716.6 million worldwide.
Burlesque was 3rd (coming in from 4th place a week before) with $6.1 million while Unstoppable was 4th with $5.9 million.
Love and Other Drugs opened in 6th place last weekend and is now in 5th place thanks to $5.6 million and a total of $23.6 million. Megamind and Due Date are 6th and 7th with $4.9 and $4.1 million. Megamind in particular lost a lot of steam because of Tangled and is now at $137.1 million
Faster managed to prove me wrong and pull a fast one (could not help myself) by staying in the top 10 for one more week (the last one for sure) with $3.9 million while the only new opening movie, The Warrior’s Way made only $3 million for 9th place.
The Next Three Days ends the top 10 with $2.5 million and we are left now waiting for the big boys to come out to play this December, Narnia 3, Tron 2, The Tourist or Little Fockers to name just a few.
