X-Men Origins: Wolverine Blu-ray breaks a few records

X-Men Origins: Wolverine may not have been as good as it could have, but it seems people liked it enough to buy it on DVD and Blu-ray as the film has broken a few records since it’s release. So far the clawed one has racked in $60 million in DVD sales, adding to the $350 million during it’s run, and now Latino Review have received a run-down on the Blu-ray success.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was the first big blockbuster out of the doors this summer so I’m sure the #1 Best Selling 2009 Blu-ray release will be taken by either Harry Potter or Transformers in a few weeks. 20th Century Fox will still be pleased with the numbers though, and now it makes sense why they are getting to work on Wolverine 2 before X-Men: First Class.

The Incredible Hulk vs. Wolverine trailer

It’s the weekend and there’s not much news so I thought I’d post this rather cool fanmade trailer I came across today. Earlier this year Marvel Studios released a Hulk Vs. Wolverine DVD, however due to different studios owning different character rights we will probably never get to see such an epic clash on the big screen for many years, if ever. YouTube user silverlightsaber knows this, and had decided to do something about it by making his own Incredible Hulk vs. Wolverine trailer, and it’s not bad.

If the trailer made you tingle in places you never knew existed then you will probably enjoy the Batman vs. Terminator trailer which was posted a few months ago. Click here to watch it!

Liev Schreiber is not sure he wants to play Victor Creed again

One of my favourite things about X-Men Origins: Wolverine was Victor Creed (aka Sabretooth) played by Liev Schreiber. He was menacing and the character was a vast improvement from the Sabretooth we saw in the first X-Men film. As he wasn’t killed off there could be a window of opportunity for him to return for Wolverine 2 which is in development, however Schreiber has told CinemaBlend that he’s not sure if he’d want to come back.

“I’m over 40 now, and do I really want to go through the physical stuff that it took to pull that off again? I’m not so sure.” At the same time, he sounded a bit like a fanboy when discussing possible futures for his character. “As an audience member, I’d be really interested to see how you’d go from the Liev Schreiber Victor Creed to the Tyler Mane Victor Creed [from X-Men]. So I’d like to see that.”

Is Liev hinting at another Sabretooth recast there? We haven’t really heard much on Wolverine 2 since 20th Century Fox announced they were developing it in May, however there is a good chance it will take Wolverine to Japan and follow the samurai storyline, so Victor Creed might not be needed.

While Liev may be too old to be charging around on all fours, he’s not old enough to be running around with Angelina Jolie in Salt, which will be released next July

Japan’s take on Wolverine and Iron Man

About a year ago Marvel made a deal with animation studio Madhouse to create four anime series for release in 2010, the first two of which would be based on Wolverine and Iron Man. Now we have teasers to cast our eyes on, and to be honest I want to pull mine out. In Wolverine’s case anyway. He/it looks nothing like the Wolverine we know and the only way I know it’s Wolverine is due to the 3 blades appearing from his/it’s hands. Iron Man, on the other hand, looks exactly the same and looks more interesting than Wolverine’s. Watch the teasers below!

Taylor Kitsch wants to go dark with Gambit next time round

If you like to keep up to date with all things Wolverine then you will know that 20th Century Fox and Hugh Jackman are developing a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, however one person who didn’t know that was Taylor Kitsch who plays Gambit. Kitsch recently spoke to Rotten Tomatoes at Cannes and he seemed pretty excited about possibly returning as Gambit for the sequel.

“Man, good on Hugh for doing that to his body again,” he laughed as we told him about the film. “I hadn’t heard that was going to happen! You have my brain going now about what I’d love to do with Gambit!”
“I’m just excited to go deeper into Gambit. It’s a flattering thing when people say that the only shitty part about the character is we didn’t see enough of him. If that’s the case, bring it on. I want to go deep into Gambit.”
“He has so many more colours to explore. I want to go dark with that cat. There are so many things I want people to see of him and he really is his own deal. In Wolverine he was very much moving the story along. If I can have some moments where you go deeper into Gambit’s back-story and why he was the way he was at that poker table — that’s a fun thing to explore.”
“I have the tools now to do some larger fights and I’d be really excited to get a chance to do that, too. I have so many ideas in my mind right now!”

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently said that Gambit would not be appearing in X-Men: First Class, but there were ‘internal discussions’ as to whether he would be popping up in Wolverine 2. I don’t think Gambit had a big enough role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine to warrent his own spin-off, so Wolverine 2 seems like the only place he could feature.

Fox developing Deadpool spin-off!

Both MTV and Variety have confirmed that 20th Century Fox are moving forward with the Deadpool spin-off they’ve been talking about ever since the character was added to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The idea from the very beginning was to introduce the character to audiences and lay foundations for a Deadpool solo film. X-Men Origins: Wolverine was recently deemed a success at the box office, therefore Fox have started to develop the spin-off with Ryan Reynolds returning as the Merc with the mouth.

Twentieth Century Fox has begun development on “Deadpool,” an “X-Men” spinoff that will be crafted as a star vehicle for Ryan Reynolds, who played the character in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”
The character is one of the most popular in Marvel Comics’ X-Men universe. Deadpool is Wade Wilson, a mercenary who, dying of cancer, submits himself to the Weapon X genetic alteration experiment and emerges as an indestructible semi-sane anti-hero. Reynolds seemed destined to play the character. In one reference in the Marvel Comics, Deadpool is described as a mix between “a Shar Pei and Ryan Reynolds.”
In one of the “Easter egg” endings of “Wolverine,” Deadpool is seen rising from the rubble and whispering “Shhh” to audiences.
The film will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel.

Fox are currently looking for a writers, and I’m sure Reynolds will be happy with this news. Here he is talking about what he’d like to see in the film when it was still up in the air:

Fox developing Wolverine 2

In what must be the most obvious piece of news this month, it has been announced that 20th Century Fox and Hugh Jackman’s production company Seed are developing a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

From Variety:

Fox and Seed are in development on a sequel to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which topped the domestic box office over the weekend.
The Seed partners have begun planning the sequel, which they are squarely focusing on the samurai storyline originated in the comic series, and whose Japanese locale was teased after the film’s final credits. A writer has yet to be hired. Seed will produce.

No word on whether director Gavin Hood will return, although we probably won’t see the sequel for another few years (2012 seem likely and would fit with the typical 3 year cycle) so we probably won’t get any major cast/crew announcements any time soon. In the meantime Jackman has a few other projects lined up. According to THR Jackman has joined Disney’s Ghostopolis:

The story centers on a man who works for the government’s Supernatural Immigration Task Force. His job is to send ghosts who have escaped into our world back to Ghostopolis. When a living boy accidentally is sent to the other side, the agent must team with a female ghost (and former flame) to bring him back.

Jackman is also keen on making Carousel, a musical, and Drive, which would see him play a solitary man who drives race cars by day and getaway cars by night in Los Angeles.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine makes $87 million

X-Men Origins: Wolverine has managed to rake in $87 million over the weekend, despite the film leaking, getting mixed reviews and swine flu. Wolverine has earned the second biggest opening for an X-Men film, being just ahead of X2’s $86 million and behind X-Men: The Last Stand’s $102.1 million.

From Variety:

Marking a howling start for the summer box office, 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” grossed $87 million from 4,099 runs at the domestic box office.
That’s the second-best opening of the four “X-Men” movies after “X2: X-Men United,” which had the advantage in opening over Memorial Day in 2003. “X2” grossed $102.1 million for the four-day holiday weekend.
“Wolverine’s” impressive bow came despite a working copy of the movie being pirated a month before the film’s opening. Studio isn’t sure how much the piracy ate into the box office, but some insiders suggest it could be as much as $20 million.
The Fox-Marvel prequel is the widest opening in Fox’s history.
“Wolverine” dropped only 15% from Friday to Saturday. Many had thought the pic will drop more, since fanboy-driven movies often see significant declines.
That’s also the same weekend that Paramount’s “Iron Man” bowed. “Iron Man” opened to $102 million.

Fox will no doubt he happy with this, although they have Star Trek to contend with next week which will most likely take the number 1 spot. However, X-Men Origins: Wolverine will probably do well enough to earn a sequel and may even get other spin-off’s green light (X-Men: First Class, X-Men Origins: Magneto)

In foreign countries, minus swine-flu-stricken Mexico, natch, Wolverine took in $73 million, Fox reported. After three days, the reputedly $130 million movie’s worldwide haul stands at $160 million.
Wolverine’s string of bad breaks, not including bad reviews, included: a leaked print, the swine-flu outbreak, and, the Chicago Bulls pushing the Boston Celtics into a Game 7 playoff game. The last one was the most recent wrinkle. According to Aronson, Wolverine’s box office was down 32 percent in Chicago last night as the Bulls played the Celtics. In victorious Boston, business was down 21 percent.
Audiences seemed fully aware of Wolverine’s bad buzz. But, in the end, per Fox’s exit polling, nearly half of all moviegoers said the film was better than they expected.
Wolverine’s audience split almost evenly along gender lines: 53 percent of moviegoers were men; 47 percent were women.

In other Wolverine news, the film is currently outselling Iron Man in tickets 3-to-1:

As of Wednesday, MovieTickets.com is reporting that “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” is currently outpacing ticket sales for “Iron Man” 3-to-1 at the same point in the sales cycle (nine days prior to the film’s release).
Both films boast release dates during the first weekend in May during the last two years. “X-Men” releases Friday, May 1, 2009. “Iron Man” released in 2008 on Friday, May 2.”

I guess the leak won’t have as much impact as previously thought.
