You may remember that an unfinished print of X-Men Origins: Wolverine appeared online in April 2009, about a month before its theatrical release. 20th Century Fox got aggressive, as you would expect, and with the help of the MPAA, FBI and local law enforcement they managed to track down a guy called Gilberto Sanchez.

Sanchez admitted to putting the workprint, complete with temporary sound and music and a darker appearance than the finished footage, on Megaupload.com after buying a copy of the film near his home in the Bronx. In March he plead guilty to “uploading a copyrighted work being prepared for commercial distribution”, and now he’s been sentenced to one year in federal prison.

“The federal prison sentence handed down in this case sends a strong message of deterrence to would-be Internet pirates,” U.S. attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in a statement. “The Justice Department will pursue and prosecute persons who seek to steal the intellectual property of this nation.”

“Although Fox was able to get defendant’s Wolverine workprint removed from his Megaupload account within approximately one day, by then, the damage was done and the film had proliferated like wildfire throughout the Internet, resulting in up to millions of infringements,” prosecutors said in court documents.

The original source of the Wolverine workprint has never been revealed, but it was thought to have been downloaded over 4.5 million times by the time the movie hit screens the following month. The studio estimated another $30-40 million could have been added to Wolverine‘s $373 million worldwide gross if the leak didn’t occur, but there’s no real way of telling how the leak impacted the box office results.

The Wolverine, the follow-up to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, may start filming sometime next year under the direction of James Mangold (Knight and Day, Walk the Line).

A few days ago AICN were sent a tip that said Simon Beaufoy, who recently won an Oscar for his Slumdog Millionaire screenplay, had been recruited to write the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Well Entertainment Weekly managed to get in contact with his agent, who denied Beaufoy had the gig, although he did say producer Lauren Shuler Donner had spoken to him about Wolverine 2.

According to Beaufoy’s manager, Beaufoy was approached by Wolverine producer Lauren Shuler Donner to gauge the writer’s interest in W2, but no formal offer was made. A Fox source says that the two met at the Slumdog Oscar party and chatted about Wolverine there. Beaufoy, in any case, didn’t feel he was right for the project. Furthermore, Fox is saying that no Wolverine 2 project is actively being developed.

With 20th Century Fox marketing X-Men Origins: Wolverine like crazy, so it should earn enough to warrent a sequel. Jackman has hinted in interviews that he would be interested in heading to Japan next time round, however I don’t know where that would fit in the X-Men timeline as apparently X-Men Origins: Wolverine finishes off just before X1 begins.

In the trailers and TV spots for X-Men Origins: Wolverine we have seen glimpses of Wolverine and Sabretooth battling it out in a number of different wars over different time periods. From the Civil War all the way through to Vietnam. All of these wars apparently take up around 15 minutes of the movie, and now we have a trailer that focuses on these epic battles. Watch it below!

We got three cool X-Men Origins: Wolverine TV spots airing on Fox last month, and now a similar event is happening tonight on Sky1 in the UK.

Sky has teamed up with Twentieth Century Fox in a “six-figure deal” to promote the hotly-anticipated ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ movie release on Sky1 and Sky1HD.

The film, which follows Hugh Jackman as Wolverine before the events depicted in the ‘X-Men’ film trilogy, will be advertised in breaks during Fox’s ’24′.

The three 60-second spots will run over consecutive breaks on March 23 to form a narrative.

I have a feeling these will just be the same as we got last month, however UK fans could check it out to see if there is anything new. 20th Century Fox are really pulling out the big guns with marketing this thing, especially in the UK.

As the X-Men movies contain a number of interesting characters it gives the marketing guys a little something to do when making the trailers. An example is with this new TV spot for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is similar to the ‘names’ trailer we got for X2. The names of Wolverine, Sabretooth, Emma Frost, Silver Fox, Agent Zero, Cyclops, Gambit and Blob flash on screen to the tune of epic music, and are followed by a small cut of the character in action. Watch it below!

While this is a Wolverine movie it appears Fox are keen on showcasing other mutants that will appear. I am actually glad they have decided to add all of these characters, as a Wolverine movie that is just a Wolverine vs. Sabretooth faceoff wouldn’t provide many interesting moneyshots for trailers.

20th Century Fox are known for pushing their weight around in regards to creative decisions on films. We’ve heard situations where they haven’t been too kind to directors, such as with Alex Proyas during I, Robot, who has said he will never work with them again, and more recently with Mathieu Kassovitz on Babylon A.D. There have been some rumours from the X-Men Origins: Wolverine set that Fox have been asses to director Gavin Hood, which involved Fox ordering people to re-decorating a set. To this day we haven’t heard anything more of it, and to be honest it was kind of a crappy rumour to begin with. I’m sure Fox could do much worse than paint the set a different shade of dark.

According to David Poland’s The Hot Blog Gavin Hood has had pretty much most of what he wanted as they come into the closing stages of post-production.

And here’s one for good measure… had a chat with a high-ranking, unmotivated-to-bullshit member of the Wolverine team… and the take is that the movie is about 90% what Gavin Hood wanted as they finish up post. So… how evil does that make Fox and will the studio get a break? Or is 90% of his vision for the first-time action film director of a comic book film not enough? Or do you think you know what percentage of compromises that Zack Snyder and Chris Nolan (the first time around) and Bryan Singer really made when making their comic book films for Warners?

Fanboys have a habit of letting their dislike for Fox overshadow their judgement on some potentially good movies, however I don’t think X-Men Origins: Wolverine will disappoint (unless you’re a Deadpool fan).

While on the rounds for Adventureland Latino Review got the chance to ask Ryan Reynolds about X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds spoke about the role of Deadpool in the film, about a possible Deadpool spin-off and how ‘chummy’ the atmosphere was on set.

Will we care about your character Deadpool?

Reynolds: You know, I think you will.

Because he’s kind of a good guy, bad guy…

Reynolds: Ya, he walks the line. Ya, I think you will actually care about him. You’ll be curious about him. You’ll be curious beyond the film, you’ll be curious about him. I play Wade Wilson and I play Deadpool, and the character I play as Deadpool, I personally, Fox may differ from me, but I personally don’t consider him as Deadpool, I consider him to be what Deadpool becomes. Or the thing Deadpool came from. It doesn’t carry on past that.

There’s talk, because Deadpool is so popular, that Fox might want to do a spin-off. Would you be interested in that?

Reynolds: Ya, I love the character. I’ve always loved the character. I remember reading one of the Deadpool comic books, and somebody asked Deadpool what he looks like. And he said he looks like a cross between a Shar-Pei and Ryan Reynolds. And I was like, I really, really wanna play this guy at some point. I thought it was pretty cool. It’s a guy that knows he’s in a comic book. How hard is it to shoot that properly? That’s not something they put in Wolverine nor would it belong in that universe.

The great thing about games is that you can put a truck load of action into them that would cost millions to put onto the big screen. So while we probably won’t be getting half of these cool sequences in the movie, we can live them through the game if we wish!

The third and final trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine is now online. It was supposed to debut over at MTV however USA Today got in a few hours earlier. The trailer features lots of what we have seen before, with a good dose of new scenes featuring Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), Silver Fox (Lynn Collins), Agent X (Daniel Henney) and Gambit (Taylor Kitsch).

USA Today were also given some new character shots which can be seen below.

There are also rumblings that we will finally get our first look at Ninja Assassin, with a trailer expected in front of Watchmen. Both are Warner Bros. films so it makes sense.
