By the hammer of Thor! Paramount has released two brief teaser trailers for Anchorman: The Legend Continues, the long-awaited sequel to 2004′s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy. It’s obvious after watching these that there should be a bunch of other variations on the same joke, and I’d love it if they released one a month until the film comes out next year. In April Anchorman 2 director Adam McKay said he’ll be spending the next few months writing the script for the sequel, and the intention is to shoot around January-February 2013. Given this time-frame we wouldn’t expect any trailers until mid-2013 at the earliest, but it appears Paramount wants to start the promotion early and will be attaching a short teaser trailer to The Dictator.

McKay gave a hint about the trailer yesterday:

See the Dictator (I worked on it and it’s crazy funny), in addition to Campaign trailer with Zach and Will there’s another treat before it.

An incoming trailer for Anchorman 2 was further backed-up by a source from Collider:

“Just got out of a screening of The Dictator. There is an Anchorman 2 teaser attached featuring the Channel 4 news team (minus Veronica) stating how excited they are to return… a concept that Brick seems to have a hard time with. Also, not sure if it was an official title or more of a slogan but the screen title read Anchorman: The Legend Continues followed by ’2013?”

While not all the original cast members are signed on for the sequel, most if not all are expected to return, and the story will focus on the dawn of the 24-hour news cycle in 1978-79. McKay told Empire “all of a sudden, local news stations diversified and had Latino anchors and African-American anchors, and any time you’re talking about diversity and the Action News team, that’s always fun to deal with.”

We’ve had no official announcement on when we can expect to see the follow-up, but Paramount will probably set the Anchorman 2 release date for late-2013 or 2014.

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for The Campaign, a political comedy starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as two opposing candidates for Congress in North Carolina. As you’d expect, they’re both really ridiculous and this seems like it has a lot of potential. The timing is pretty good for this one, too, since its U.S. release is set for August 10th, just before the real-life presidential elections. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section.

When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center. At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about. As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other, in this mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy from “Meet the Parents” director Jay Roach that takes today’s political circus to its logical next level. Because even when you think campaign ethics have hit rock bottom, there’s room to dig a whole lot deeper.

This cast looks like a perfect match with this director for this political send-up, and I’m pleased to see Jason Sudeikis on board as well. Are you looking forward to The Campaign?

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have been wanting to make another movie together since they collaborated on The Other Guys, and they’ve had their sights set on a movie called 3 Mississippi for some time now. The Hollywood Reporter says that film is one step closer to reality now, because the writer/director team of John Morris and Sean Anders has signed on to rewrite the script. Anders, who directed the underrated comedy Sex Drive, will direct this movie. More after the jump.

The movie, which has also been referred to as Turkey Bowl, follows two feuding families who are bitter rivals in a game of touch football every Thanksgiving. The actors will play the leads of the respective households, and they hope filming will begin in September of this year.

I loved the dynamic between Wahlberg and Ferrell in The Other Guys, and I can’t wait to see them reunite for a project as ridiculous as this one. It sounds like it could be an entire movie taken from that football sequence in Wedding Crashers, and I’m OK with that. Are you interested in seeing these actors star opposite each other again?

Top Will Ferrell Movies

There are actors out there that avoid getting type cast and then there’s Will Ferrell. This guy is clearly one-note in maybe 9 out of 10 movies, but boy does he embrace that note, even master it. Yes, I’ve said it, Will Ferrell is the master of one-note comedy and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Will Ferrell is in Casa De Mi Padre right now and while that’s a movie most of you won’t see (mainly thanks to the language barrier), the guy still has dozens of flicks under his belt that you have seen. So today we shall go through the top Will Ferrell movies based on his biggest box office hits in North America (where he is so much more popular), unadjusted for inflation.

10. Curious George (2006) $58.3 million – This is a hand-drawn animated flick based on a popular children’s book series. The film follows the adventures of George, a monkey, brought from Africa to a big city. Can’t say I’ve seen this, but I think at the very least young children might enjoy Curious George.

9. Bewitched (2005) $63.3 million – Based on the popular 60′s TV show, Bewitched is not a good movie. If you’re a fan of Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman you could give it a try, otherwise skip Bewitched.

8. Old School (2003) $75.5 million – One of the taglines of this film sounds something like this: “All the fun of college, none of the education”. Old School is about 3 guys that had enough of their lives, and decide to form a campus fraternity to recapture their collage glory years. Great comedy, see it.

7. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) $85.2 million – This is something of a classic among Will Ferrell fans and I can’t say I disagree. If you’re new to his brand of comedy, then Anchorman is the perfect film to start with. If you don’t like Ron Burgundy, most of the films on this list are not for you.

6. Step Brothers (2008) $100.4 million – Here Will Ferrell teams up with old buddy John C. Reilly for a stupid yet funny comedy about two men-children that become step brothers when their single parents decide to marry. I remember laughing so much when seeing it, so Step Brothers gets my vote.

5. Blades of Glory (2007) $118.6 million – This time we have Will Ferrell and Jon Heder as a pair of ice skaters. After an incident that sees them banned from men figure skating for life, they are forced to work together in order to form a male-male pair and retake their glory. It sounds stupid because it is, yet I can’t not recommend this.

4. The Other Guys (2010) $119.2 million – I already mentioned this in another top 10 so between then and now, not much has changed. This is still a good buddy cop comedy and you should see it.

3. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) $148.2 million – My favorite Will Ferrell comedy, probably because I’m a fan of motorsports and this is about a NASCAR driver. Actually forget that, I love Talladega Nights for this scene in particular and if you haven’t seen the film yet, then shame on you. And yes, that’s Sasha Baron Cohen in the clip.

2. Megamind (2010) $148.4 million – Another animated flick here, this time one of them computer generated ones, 3D and all. I’m probably in the minority here but I enjoyed Megamind more than Despicable Me, maybe because I saw it first. Unfortunately it wasn’t nearly as popular as Despicable Me. Either way it’s a good animated flick that turns superheroes into baddies and baddies into superheroes.

1. Elf (2003) $173.4 million – This film right here took Will Ferrell to new heights, ones he hasn’t reached since. Elf is a great Christmas family movie and Will Ferrell is perfect as the human who believes himself to be an elf. Zooey Deschanel is absolutely gorgeous as the love interest.

Clearly I have a soft spot for the goofy Will Ferrell so naming a few other flicks that didn’t make this list, yet totally deserved, won’t be a problem. Now all 10 films above are comedies but actually Will Ferrell has done dramatic work too, stuff like the more recent Everything Must Go or Stranger than Fiction, the later being my favorite and probably his best role yet.

When it comes to comedy, Will Ferrell tends to rely on applying the same formula of characters to a different environment and plot, which has turned out to be successful in most cases.

Although this didn’t necessarily work well for Ferrell’s latest Casa De Mi Padre, who’s gimmick was a comedy entirely in Spanish, poking fun at both low budget films and Spanish soap operas. While the film was given a limited release, Ferrell’s name alone didn’t really draw people to the theatre. Ferrell’s solution? Make a sequel of one of his most successful films of course!

Yep, according to Deadline, Anchorman 2 is indeed being made despite the project being seemingly extinct, this time being produced by Paramount instead of Dreamworks due to Dreamworks 2.0 departing the studio.

So you’ll finally get to see the return of Ferrell’s Ron Burgandy and original cast members Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd in all their raunchy, over-the-top glory. The announcement was actually done by Ferrell himself on Conan O’Brien’s talk show, which aired last night, and you can check out the clip for yourself below:

The film will be produced under Judd Apatow’s banner and Adam McKay will both direct and write the script with Ferrell. Despite the usual skepticism regarding sequels to comedies (Hangover Part 2 anyone?), the film could work if it focuses on a solid plot rather than a rehashing, but also not relying on just a one-note gag like Casa De Mi Padre.

Again, it’s still early to actually determine virtually anything at all regarding the project, but one thing’s for certain; expect the typical Ferrell brand of comedy. Whether this is a great idea or just another “beating a dead horse” attempt is yet to be determined until more is revealed, but is the world ready for another Anchorman? Better yet, do they even want one?

Will Ferrell is going back to college. The star of Old School will star in New Line’s newly-acquired Crazy U, based on Andrew Ferguson’s book “Crazy U: One Dad’s Crash Course in Getting His Kid Into College.”

According to Deadline, Ferrell will play a father who pulls out all the stops to get his kid admitted into a fancy college. He contacts in-demand private consultants, becomes heavily involved in helping his son study for the SATs, attends campus tours and helps with admissions letters, etc. Ferrell is the kind of guy whose comedy is so unique, you can practically picture this entire movie in your head right now without having seen a frame of it. This sounds like a great project for him to evolve a bit past his Old School days but still retain that unique brand of loud, almost childish humor that has worked so well for him during his career.

It wouldn’t surprise me if many of you have never heard of Casa de Mi Padre. This parody of telenovelas is almost entirely in Spanish (with English subtitles), and its tiny budget didn’t allow for a large advertising campaign. So what’s the big draw? For me, it was Will Ferrell spending an entire movie speaking Spanish. If you’re the type of person that finds that concept to be funny, then you’ll likely find some other enjoyable elements to this movie. For everyone else, I can easily see how the gag could grow tiring very quickly. But even if the comedy isn’t quite as plentiful as I would have preferred, there’s something charming about this low-fi comedy.

Ferrell plays Armando Alvarez, a Mexican rancher living on his father’s land. He’s a loveable lunkhead – a little slow, but he’s got a good heart. His younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) returns home with his new fiance, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez), and plans to save their father’s failing ranch with some newfound money. But when Armando discovers that drugs are the source of his brother’s income and falls in love with Sonia, he must do what is necessary to protect her and his family’s land against the local drug lord, Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal).

While the premise may sound like a Funny or Die sketch, I do actually think there is more story here than could be contained in a short film. My issue was that even with a short 84 minute run time, this movie still felt a bit too long. The pace of a comedy should never drag, and this one felt like it could lose about twenty minutes and be a perfect length. But since even small budget features avoid run times of only an hour, the filmmakers tacked on some extra fluff I didn’t find totally necessary. (A run-in with a white mountain lion becomes a plot point that could have been removed completely.) But despite my issues with the length, there’s a homespun charm to the movie that provides a few laughs and adds to the DIY vibe. Backdrops that are obviously painted are mixed in with fake plants in the foreground, miniature cars drive through a model town, puppets are randomly used instead of real animals, and reels that go missing are all employed to occasionally give the film a nearly sweded feel.

Casa is funny, but it’s not quite up to par with most of Ferrell’s other work. A lot of my laughter came from the simplicity in his earnest delivery and his ability to play his character straight; rarely did the scenes that were intended to be funny really crack me up. A lot of the jokes are very specific to the telenovela style it’s sending up, which is fine, but I didn’t get all the inside jokes; it’s the same reason that people who aren’t obsessed with pop culture probably don’t find “Community” that funny. Slow zooms, wildly dramatic moments, random songs, soft-haze flashbacks, and slow motion gunfights made the audience members of Hispanic descent in my theater lose their collective sh*t, and from what I’ve seen on the segments of “The Soup” that highlight content from Univision and the like, those are all staples of that style of storytelling. There’s a great song sequence in the middle that has a nice Anchorman flourish, and Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation”) was hysterical in a small role, delivering his lines in the worst Spanish accent I’ve ever heard. He wasn’t even trying, and that’s why it was funny – it reminded me of Brad Pitt’s character’s Italian accent near the end of Inglourious Basterds.

Bernal and Luna were very aware of the type of movie they were in, and both relished the chance to chew scenery at every turn. They’ve done much more high-profile, serious stuff before, but they – like everyone else – just looked like they were having a blast making this movie, and that infectiousness shone through. Genesis Rodriguez was also really great to watch, but for another reason entirely: she’s drop dead gorgeous. It’s hard for me to judge acting ability that isn’t spoken in my native tongue (and it’s especially difficult in a movie that’s a blatant parody, so she could have been overacting on purpose), so all I can tell you is that she was a convincing love interest.

Casa de Mi Padre has everything you’re probably looking for in a spoof of melodramatic Spanish soap operas: wedding murders, vision quests, mansion battles, and sex montages that include Will Ferrell’s bare ass for minutes on end. I just wish it had some more laughs. Until next time…

As Armando Alvarez’s (Ferrell) ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando’s younger brother Raul, an international businessman, shows up with his new fiancé, Sonia. It seems the ranch’s troubles are over as Raul pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. But when Armando falls for Sonia & Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, they find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord.

Matt Piedmont (Funny or Die videos) directed the movie, which is set to be released March 16, 2012.
