Peter Jackson and his team have managed to find ways of including Frodo and Legolas into The Hobbit movies, despite the fact the characters didn’t appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s book. So what about Aragorn?

In a recent interview to promote A Dangerous Method Viggo Mortensen said he was at one point asked to wield his sword again when there were plans for a “bridge movie” set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but as that plan was scrapped he won’t be appearing in either film.

Has Peter Jackson asked you to return to Middle Earth in the Hobbit movie in any capacity?

Mortensen: At one point, the producers asked if I would do it and I said sure if Aragorn is supposed to be in the bridge story because he’s not in The Hobbit. I would rather do it than see someone else do it, but I’ve never been asked and they’re shooting the movie. I’m not in it unless it there is some last-minute plan they have, but I thought I would have heard of it by now. Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett shot something, but they’re elves and don’t change as rapidly. As you know, Aragorn is half elf and also lives a couple hundred years or more and he could be in a bridge, but I have to assume it isn’t going to happen. That was an important period in my life and I will always be grateful that the trilogy was so successful and gave me a lot of new opportunities. I never would have gotten A History of Violence, no matter how much David wanted me, had it not been for my newfound notoriety.

The “bridge film” would have been based on appendix material written by J.R.R. Tolkien, but Guillermo del Toro decided against making it when he was on-board as director as he believed the narrative and characters from The Hobbit alone are rich enough to fit into two films. It would have been great to see characters like Aragorn again, but focusing solely on The Hobbit and expanding it in places will probably work out for the best.

After months of negotiations with Universal Viggo Mortensen has decided not to appear in Snow White and the Huntsman. No reason was given, although Variety speculate that he may have dropped out to play the villain in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. Both intend to start shooting in the second half of the year, so Viggo may have decided to appear in his first comic book movie.

This telling of Snow White focuses on the Huntsman who is hired by the evil queen (Charlize Theron) to track down her runaway stepdaughter (Kristen Stewart). After realizing the queen intends to kill Snow White, he helps her escape, and the pair go on the run. Johnny Depp, Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender have all been linked to the role of the Huntsman over the pasts few months, so it looks like Universal will have to find another in-demand actor who isn’t busy elsewhere.

Halo 3: ODST commercial director Rupert Sanders is directing and the aim is to begin shooting in August for a December 2012 release.

Viggo Mortensen is still being lined up to star in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, but the actor may have a dilemma on his hands as producer Christopher Nolan and Superman director Zack Snyder are apparently interested in him playing their villain, General Zod.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Sources say no talks have commenced and that Mortensen is just a “person of interest,” much like Kevin Costner is for the role of Jonathan Kent. The actors aren’t the only ones considered for their respective roles, though they are the ones most seriously talked about.

General Zod is an evil and super-powered scientist who was portrayed by Terrence Stamp in 1980′s Superman II. Wikipedia states he “possesses vast super strength, speed & stamina; various extra sensory and vision powers (including super hearing, x-ray vision, telescopic vision, microscopic vision, and heat vision); tremendous lung capacity and super breath (wind and ice); invulnerability, and flight.” The same powers as Superman, basically. It looks like we’ll see Superman engaged in a few big fights this time round.

Filming is set to take place later this year with the aim of a December 2012 release, so confirmations will likely be appearing over the next few weeks and months. The only confirmed role so far is Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman.

According to THR Kristen Stewart is in negotiations to join Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron in Snow White and the Huntsman. The actress would play Snow White if the talks work out, but the site says the deal is not done and could still fall apart.

Rupert Sanders is directing and the aim is to begin shooting sometime this summer for a December 2012 release. Personally I would have prefered Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) who was also said to be screen-testing, but I guess Stewart has more commercial appeal thanks to The Twilight Saga.

Variety reports that Viggo Mortensen is in talks to star in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Michael Fassbender was also circling the role of the Huntsman but decided to head into space with Ridley Scott instead, which paved the way for Mortensen to join the movie.

Interestingly, The Hobbit: Part 1 is set to go head-to-head with Snow White as it will be released 2 days beforehand. Viggo will be battling against Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins this time (at the box office, that it).

Universal are currently searching for a unknown fresh face to play Snow White, and they aim to find one soonish as there are numerous competing Snow White movies in the works, including one over at Relativity Media with Tarsem Singh directing.

A while ago I read a quote from Viggo Mortensen saying that he was considering retiring from the movie business, however he said this while on the rounds promoting a movie and I just assumed he was tired of the whole PR process. After days of travelling, promoting and answering the same crappy questions i’m sure there are many actors and actresses who have considering giving it up. However, in a recent interview with Men’s Journal (via WorstPreviews) Viggo confirmed he’s going though with it.

“I have no plans to do another movie. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m open to seeing how I feel in a while, but right now I’m not saying yes to anything. My agent is like, ‘Well, if you don’t do anything, people will forget about you…’ I just feel like I’ve taken on too much for a while.”

I’ll admit I didn’t know about Viggo Mortensen until The Lord of the Rings, but i’ve been following his movies ever since and he’s been working pretty solidly over the past few years. I hope he does a Daniel-Day Lewis and takes on an interesting role every two years or so. I’d hate for him to just disappear from the movie scene forever.

A great first trailer for The Road has appeared online. The Road is a post-apocalyptic tale of a journey taken by a father and his young son across a barren landscape that was blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed civilization and most life on earth. The cast includes Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Guy Pearce.

The Road will be released in October in the US.

The trailer for Ed Harris’ Appaloosa is now online. The western stars Viggo Mortensen, Renée Zellweger, Jeremy Irons and Harris himself. The story is adapted from Robert B. Parker’s novel of the same name and centers on a pair of friends who are hired to protect a lawless town suffering at the hands of a renegade rancher. Then Renée Zellweger, who has recently been widowed, turns up and disrupts things.

We’ve heard from Ian McKellan about wanting to be in the new Hobbit movies, now Viggo Mortensen has thrown his hat into the ring – the ONE ring, that is! – as well:

Mortensen also said he would like to replay the “Lord of the Rings” part of Aragorn in future “Hobbit” movies that have been announced by “Rings” director Peter Jackson. “I’d rather not have another actor play the part I started out playing for Peter Jackson. And I had a lot of friends from that experience,” he said.

It would be so amazing if they could get as much of the original cast back for the prequels!  Viggo was amazing, as were the rest, and I can’t quite picture anyone else playing the roles.

Don’t screw this up, or you’re bound to piss a lot of people off!
