Screen Gems has released a new trailer for Underworld Awakening which contains new action scenes involving Selene (Kate Beckinsale), more of Selene’s vampire/Lycan hybrid daughter, and more of their battle against the Lycans.

Swedish directing duo Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein are behind the camera, and John Hlavin (The Shield) wrote the script, which underwent revisions by J. Michael Straczynski (The Changeling). Len Wiseman, who directed the first two movies in the franchise, is producing.

Underworld: Awakening will be released in 3D on January 20th, 2012 and also stars Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley and Charles Dance.

Screen Gems has released the new trailer for Underworld Awakening. The teaser mostly served to showcase the action scenes involving Selene (Kate Beckinsale), but in this trailer we see more of Selene’s daughter, and her battle against Lycans.

Earlier this month is was announced that Swedish director duo Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein would be directing Kate Beckinsale in Underworld 4, which has now been given the title Underworld: New Dawn. Plot details have been kept under-wraps, however now a synopsis for the movie has found its way online.

From Bloody-Disgusting:

“After being held in a coma-like state for fifteen years, vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) learns that she has a fourteen-year-old vampire/Lycan hybrid daughter, Nissa, and when she finds her they must stop BioCom from creating super Lycans that will kill them all.”

So not only will Beckinsale have a daughter in the movie, she”ll also have to fight off super werewolves. I suppose after 4 movies there are only certain places left to go with the vampires vs. werewolves concept.

Swedish director duo Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein will be directing Kate Beckinsale in Underworld 4 according to Heat Vision. They previously directed Shelter, a supernatural thriller starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers which has yet to be released in the US.

Filming is set to begin in March 2011 in Vancouver. John Hlavin (The Shield) wrote the script, which underwent revisions by J. Michael Straczynski (The Changeling). Len Wiseman, who directed the first two movies in the franchise, will be producing.

No story details have been revealed at the moment, although as casting gets underway more on the movie will be revealed. Screen Gems has set a January 20, 2012 release date.

With Screen Gems already setting a January 20th, 2012 release date for Underworld 4 last month it was only a matter of time before we got some casting confirmations. The first (and expected) news is that Kate Beckinsale will return as Selene.

According to Deadline filming will begin in March in Vancouver, although no director is attached at the moment. That will no doubt change over the upcoming weeks as talks will already be in place. Patrick Tatopoulos directed Underworld: Rise of the Lycans last year and doesn’t seem to have much going on so he could return. Len Wiseman will be producing, but he could direct as he did with the first two films in the franchise.

Screen Gems has moved back the release date for Underworld 4 from September 23, 2011 to January 20, 2012. Last month Len Wiseman said the fourth film in the franchise is “being written and talked about and hopefully all comes together”. With this new release date set it looks like it will.

When asked if Kate Beckinsale would be back as Selena Wiseman replied, “Yes. That’s the plan. We’re both waiting to see what kind of story comes together. It’s just getting the script to a certain place where we’re both happy with it.”

Wiseman didn’t say whether he would be directing this time or just producing again, but one thing we do know is that it will be shot in 3D.

There was speculation late last year that Kate Beckinsale had signed up to reprise her role of Selena in Underworld 4, although the actress later said she didn’t “know anything about that” but she may return “if they came up with an amazing script”.

Well in a recent interview Len Wiseman, who has the pleasure of waking up with Beckinsale at his side most mornings, says things are coming together and he plans to parade his wife in tight leather once more.

From IGN:

“It’s all being written and talked about and hopefully all comes together. So we’re seeing how things happen. But we’re all keeping our fingers crossed.”

Wiseman directed the first two films but took a step back and only produced the third. His wife, Kate Beckinsale, also did not star in the third film, but there has been talk of her returning in the fourth film.

When I asked Wiseman if Beckinsale would indeed be back, he replied, “Yes. That’s the plan. We’re both waiting to see what kind of story comes together. It’s just getting the script to a certain place where we’re both happy with it.”

Wiseman didn’t say whether he would be directing this time or just producing again, but one thing we do know is that it will most likely be 3D.

Earlier this month there was a report by Bloody-Disgusting saying that Kate Beckinsale had signed up for Underworld 4 and will be reprise her role of Selena. Well who better to ask if this is true than the woman herself? Collider got the chance to speak to Beckinsale while she was on the rounds promoting Whiteout, and it looks like she isn’t on-board just yet.

I don’t know anything about a 4th Underworld. I don’t know anything about that at this point.

I know they have…it was always conceived as a trilogy, which I was never going to be in the third one. I think if they came up with an amazing script I wouldn’t be adverse to it. But it’s not planned or anything.

I don’t think my daughter needs to see my bottom in rubber for another ten years. But I don’t know, I’ve heard they’re talking about a 4th one, but I don’t know if that’s officially happening or it’s that a rumor. As far as I’m concerned it’s just a rumor.

Her daughter may not need to see her bottom in rubber for another ten years, however I’m sure nobody else will have an objection to it.

Less than a week ago it was announced that Screen Gems were working on Underworld 4. Apparently they are planning to film it in 3D, and they also intend for it to start a whole new trilogy. However, a few questions arose from this news. Firstly, which cast members would be returning? Would Rhona Mitra be carrying on from Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, or would Kate Beckinsale be returning to lead the franchise? Well according to Bloody-Disgusting Beckinsale may be back:

…we started doing some digging and have stumbled on to a pretty big discovery. Two sources have told Bloody Disgusting that Kate Beckinsale is in fact attached to return as the beautiful vampire warrior Selene, who made her first appearance in Len Wiseman’s film from 2003. What does this mean? It means Kate-Beckinsale-in-pleather-in-mother-effin’-3D, that’s what! Now, I should be clear that this should be taken strictly as rumor as we have not been able to get any official confirmation from people involved in the actual film, or studio for that matter.

A quick glance at Kate Beckinsale’s IMDB page shows that she hasn’t got any projects lined up, so that could increase the chances of her returning. However last October when asked if she would play Selene again she said:

“I feel like I’ve played that character enough times that I don’t think I’d be excited to play the same character again. It’s a weird experience. I’ve never done that before, you’re playing the same character in two movies, and after two, I feel like I’m kind of done with that.”

But if the script (and pay) is good then I guess she would find it hard to turn down.
