While watched by millions, Michael Bay’s Transformers movies get a lot of criticism for being big dumb blockbusters full of CGI and explosions. I have a feeling Peter Berg’s Battleship will be greeted by a similar reception upon its release as Universal are effectively just copying and pasting the concept which worked so well for Paramount and Michael Bay.

Based on Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

Battleship opens fire on May 18th, 2012.

The Super Bowl TV spot for Disney’s John Carter offers little in new footage, but it is probably the most ‘epic’ trailer we’ve seen to date. Reaction to the marketing so far has been mixed, but i’m still holding out to see what the director of WALL·E and Finding Nemo has put together.

The 2012 Super Bowl is just around the corner, and for movie fans that means we have a bunch of TV spots to look forward to. Marvel will be airing a commercial for The Avengers this Sunday, and today they released a short teaser which gives us a glimpse at what to expect.

Disney has released two new TV spots for their $200+ million movie adaptation of John Carter via Yahoo! While the movie is still over 3 months away Disney are happy to give us a glimpse at new footage, most notable new battle/actions scenes which look quite impressive.

20th Century Fox have released the first TV spot for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It’s light on the action, but it does contain bits of new footage including a scuffle between James Franco and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter). It also looks like WETA are well on their way to completing the visuals, as we’re now getting even closer close-ups of the apes (think eyeballs).

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is an origins story set in present-day San Francisco. The film is a reality-based cautionary tale, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. One hyper-intelligent chimp called Caesar (motion captured by Andy Serkis) incites a worldwide ape revolution and causes the downfall of humankind.

James Franco plays a young, driven scientist who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes, with Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto playing a primatologist. The movie also stars John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton, David Oyelowo and Andy Serkis as Caesar, and will be released August 5, 2011.

Warner Bros. is ramping up the marketing for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, with multiple TV spots airing over recent days. Some are now online (in both good and bad quality), and contain a good amount of new footage, so avoid if you want to save yourself until July 15th.

The spot below isn’t the best quality, but we are treated to a voice-over from Dumbledore (Michael Gambon).

This TV spot apparently aired on Nickelodeon so it’s more light-hearted and features new footage of the trio below Gringotts and Professor McGonagall (Dame Maggie Smith) taking charge at Hogwarts.

This third TV spot contains lots of new footage and give us our first look at Kelly Macdonald as The Grey Lady. She’s ain’t happy.

Update: Here’s another one which looks to have been recorded from a TV. Lots of battle shots and a glimpse at a death (spoilers).

The spot contains a few new scenes including Harry in the forest, the trio below Gringotts and a gang lead by Kingsley entering the Great Hall.

The teaser trailer for Conan the Barbarian didn’t offer much as it was mostly smoke, but the first full trailer gave us an idea of the direction Lionsgate were taking their Conan reboot, and it looked pretty much as expected. There was nothing particularly new or exciting about it, but some of the action looked interesting.

Today a new TV spot for Conan the Barbarian has been released, and while it only lasts 30 seconds, there’s plenty of new shots.

The movie, directed by Marcus Nispel (Pathfinder), will be released August 19th in 2D and 3D and follows Conan (Jason Momoa) as he ventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village. Momoa is joined by Ron Perlman who plays Conan’s father, Stephen Lang (Avatar) who will be villain Khalar Singh, and Rose McGowan who plays a “half-human/half-witch”.

Paramount Pictures has released a new TV spot for J.J Abrams’ Super 8, which is produced by Steven Spielberg. In the 30 second spot titled ‘It Arrives’ we don’t see the monster/alien/thing but we do get some new footage, including a car spinning in the air in the middle of a street.

Meanwhile 20 minutes of Super 8 footage was screened recently at the Cannes Film Festival, and you can read a description of what was shown over at Total Film.

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

The movie stars Zach Mills, Ryan Lee, Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Noah Emmerich, Ron Eldard and Amanda Michalka, and will hit screens on June 10th.
