David Duchovny Blames Disappointing X-Files Box Office On The Dark Knight

David Duchovny has blamed going up against The Dark Knight as the main reason why X-Files: I Want To Believe performed poorly at the box office, taking in only $10 million in its opening weekend.

“I’d prefer if it was a huge hit, but there are mitigating circumstances. We happened to open on the worst day in the history of cinema – the second week of Batman. The only thing worse would be to open with Batman and nobody would’ve done that.”
Duchovny suggested that the movie still has a chance of turning a profit because of its relatively small budget.
“We’re competing for the same audience with what they’re saying will be the highest grossing film of all time,” he said. “What saves us is that we only cost $29 million to make. We’re a small movie masquerading as a blockbuster.”

Duchovny has a point. People cared more about how much The Dark Knight would take in it’s second weekend than there were about seeing the X-Files. The film has also been getting poor reviews, with some people calling it:

Slow, laborious and ponderous without ever earning the right to be, I Want To Believe is a mis-fire that threatens the franchise’s very existence. The only mystery here is, what went wrong?

The movie will probably make a profit, only a small one though.

We have a new trailer for The X-Files: I Want To Believe In A World When Movies No Longer Have Colons Followed By Stupid Words That Only Serve A Purpose When Placing DVD’s Alphabetically In Stores Which Are Now On There Way Out Thanks To The Internet.

The new trailer is quite good. As usual we get more snow searching and Billy Connelly bleeding from his eyeballs, however we also get to see shadows of monsters and other creepy stuff. Check it out below!

Last night I watched Billy Connelly doing a stand up comedy performance on TV, so to now watch him get all serious is quite a contrast.

…is the official title to the upcoming X-Files movie. “I Want to Believe” was the slogan on a poster Duchovny’s UFO-obsessed agent Fox Mulder had hanging in the cluttered basement office where he and Anderson’s Dana Scully worked.

“It’s a natural title,” writer Chris Carter said. “It’s a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. ‘I Want to Believe.’ It really does suggest Mulder’s struggle with his faith.”
Carter said he settled on “I Want to Believe” from the time he and co-writer Frank Spotnitz started on the screenplay. It took so long to go public with it because studio executives wanted to make sure it was a marketable title, he said.

What do you think of the title? It is a good choice or is it cheesy?
