Starting this week we’re going to also take a look at international box office, you asked for it (well one of you at least, a very long time ago) and now you got it, raw and uncut, more after the break.

Tangled, mostly thanks to a great UK opening of $8.1 million, took the number one spot last weekend with $17.3 million for a total of $254.3 million and $449.2 million worldwide (International plus North America).

The Green Hornet was a close 2nd with $15.4 million for little over $60 million so far and a grand total of $139.8 million worldwide. Unfortunately it will finish with only about $100 million or so Internationally, add to that another $110 in North America and a $210 million worldwide total is definitely a disappointment for a $120 million movie.

On the other end of the disappointment scale is Tron Legacy with $12 million and $196 million so far, $363 million worldwide on a $170 million budget and still not out of fuel. Black Swan is a surprising 4th place with $11.6 million for $28.9 million and when all is said and done this should finish way past the $100 million mark thanks to fantastic holds all over the world. This might just be the movie that makes ballet popular once again. Black Swan is slowly but surely turning into a worldwide phenomenon that will bring director Darren Aronofsky the attention he deserves.

The King’s Speech was 5th with $11.3 million and thus far it has banked $67.4 million, yet another magnificent movie that deserves every last cent made so far and more.

In 6th and 7th place Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter made $10.2 million for $42.3 million so far while Gulliver’s Travels with $9.4 million and $125.8 million is somewhat saved here after the awful performance pulled in North America (only $41 million).

Yogi Bear made $7.8 million and $34.7 million so far for a worldwide total of $127.4 million, definitely not the next Alvin and the Chipmunks. And now for the only non-US movie in the top 10, Gantz coming all the way from Japan (only) made it to 9th place with $7.3 million in just 3 days. IMDB is not very popular in Japan it seems but wikipedia will give you a lot more info on this anime inspired flick.

Finally in 10th place The Tourist with $6.6 million and $150.3 million so far. Foreign box office has definitely been the saving grace of this movie, now standing at $216.8 million worldwide on a $100 million budget.

Read similar posts to Tangled foreign box office at Filmonic

The Tourist arrives on DVD and Blu-ray March 22nd

DVD Release Date

Angelina Jolie

Blu-ray

DVD

Johnny Depp

The Tourist

Update: Amazon has made The Tourist available to pre-order ready for its March 22nd release. Three movies opened, one of them bombed and for the first time ever we had half the top 10 made up of 3D movies during a weekend, more after the break.

Coincidence or not, the last time Christmas was on a Saturday, in 2004, Meet the Fockers was first with $46.1 million and a total of $70.5 million over the 5-day opening week. This year we have Little Fockers, the third in the Meet the Parents series (now a trilogy) with $30.8 million over the Christmas weekend and $45 million over the 5-day opening week. So obviously the years have not been kind to the Fockers and many would go as far and say that this third entry was to little to late. Ok, it might not be the huge hit Meet the Fockers was, but Little Fockers is no doubt still doing well enough to bring a few smiles down at Universal. Chances for a 4th movie are now close to zero (Universal was actually hoping to milk the Fockers a bit more).

True Grit is a nice surprise in 2nd place with $24.8 million over the weekend and $36 million over the 5-day opening, all on a $38 million budget and to make things even more impressive, this is a western. Now I love westerns but it seems moviegoers are not so in love with this dieing genre as they once were (understatement to say the least) so to see True Grit doing so well on Christmas no less makes me all worm inside, maybe people still have taste in movies, who know.

Tron: Legacy is 3rd falling pretty badly to $19.1 million and a North American grand total of $93.7 million after 11 days. Worldwide the movie is now at $159.2 million, very underwhelming considering the $170 million budget behind it all. But all is not lost yet for Tron because weekdays are looking good so Disney won’t lose money on it (probably) but they won’t make enough to green light a third either.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Trader was pretty impressive with the smallest drop in the top 10, -23.5% for $9.4 million, $66 so far in 18 days and $231.1 million worldwide. Now it still has a long way to go until it becomes profitable but the good legs it’s showing right now give fans hope that they have yet to see the last of Narnia. No doubt international numbers are the saving grace of Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Yogi Bear was in 5th place with $7.8 million and is doing a lot better business then I thought it would. The Fighter is 6th with $7.6 million while Tangled was 7th with $6.4 million and making a very strong comeback in weekdays, now at $146.9 million, this tale is far from over.

Gulliver’s Travels in 8th place with $6.3 million is the bomb I was talking about at the start of this post. Now this opened on Saturday, so it only had 2 days, but still, a family movie that just came out making so little money over Christmas, this is going to hurt Fox.

Finally Black Swan was 9th with $6.2 million still slowly expanding, now in 1466 theaters. Almost forgot, The Tourist was 10th with $5.4 million.

Read similar posts to Little Fockers leads Christmas weekend (Dec. 24-26) at Filmonic

Tron: Legacy derezzed all competition at the box office (Dec. 17-19)

Movie News

Black Swan

Box Office

Box Office Results

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

How Do You Know

Tangled

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treade

The Fighter

The Tourist

Tron

Tron Legacy

Unstoppable

Yogi Bear

It was an easy win for Tron: Legacy last weekend at the box office, grossing in 3 days more then the 1982 classic Tron made in its entire run. Truth be told, ticket price inflation is responsible for that difference but I don’t think I have to tell you that. Tron was a pretty expensive movie for Disney back then and it didn’t exactly turn into a home run at the box office, probably the main reason it took them 28 years to make the sequel, a sequel that was green lit based on the reception of a San Diego Comic Con teaser released in 2008. Tron: Legacy is a movie made because fans asked for it and those same fans seem to have come to watch this, but can they be enough to cover the $170 million Disney invested in Legacy (compared to 17 million for Tron in 1982), the upcoming holiday week will answer that question.

Yogi Bear was 2nd with a middle of the pack $16.4 million that should translate to a somewhat decent $60-$80 million final gross in North America. Any other time this kind of opening would mean $50 million tops, but family movies like this tend to have very good holds around Christmas as box office history will tell us (look no further then Alvin and the Chipmunks, opened with 44 million and made almost 5 times more at the end).

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader made $12.3 million, dropping 48.4%, the best 2nd weekend drop for the franchise, unfortunately with this already small numbers, Voyage has a long way to go before it can call itself profitable. Right now the 3rd entry in the Narnia series sits at $173.9 million worldwide on a $155 million budget.

The Fighter expanded to 4th place with $12.1 million while Tangled is 5th with $8.7 million and $129.9 million so far.

In 6th The Tourist continues to struggle with $8.5 million while Black Swan was in 7th place with $8.3 million for a total of $17.2 million.

In 8th, 9th and 10th we have How Do You Know with $7.4 million (there are only so many words you can use to describe this $120 million disaster), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 with $5 million for $266.6 million ($825 million worldwide) and Unstoppable with $1.8 million for a total of $77.6 million so far.

Read similar posts to Tron: Legacy derezzed all competition at the box office (Dec. 17-19) at Filmonic

Tron: Legacy gets ready to win the weekend

Movie News

Black Swan

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

How Do You Know

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treade

The Fighter

The Tourist

Tron Legacy

Yogi Bear

At this point we know we ain’t getting another Avatar this December but the big number of wide releases for the weekend might make up for that. We have Tron: Legacy (tracking for an easy win), Yogi Bear and How Do You Know opening while critic and awards darlings The Fighter and Black Swan go from limited to wide in terms of available theaters to watch them in, more after the break.

So Tron: Legacy can’t save this tepid December all by itself, we got that much down, but it should still make about $35 million or so in the 3451 theaters it opens in on Friday. Critical reception is mixed while the first movie didn’t impress with big box office numbers (otherwise we would have gotten the sequel a lot sooner) so chances are if you ain’t a fan of the first movie (of the older, above 21 crowd) this won’t make you a fan of the series. So crossover appeal is limited, all we got left is the cult classic status the first Tron got back in 1982 when it made $33 million on a $17 million budget.

Yogi Bear, as much as I hate the way it looks, is bound to finish in 2nd place with $20 million. Won’t come close to Alvin and the Chipmuncks numbers, but it won’t be Marmaduke either.

I can see The Fighter, expanding to 2503 theaters, making about $18 million for 3rd place and considering the buzz this movie is getting, it could become one of the breakout hits of the winter going above $80 million in North America when all is said and done.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is, hopefully going to score the lowest drop in the franchise, we all know it definitely needs that to stay alive. $15 million for 4th place and a total of only $45 million at the end of the weekend.

Black Swan expanded to 90 theaters last weekend and made the top 10 with $3.3 million, now it will be in 959 theaters so I’m expecting $12 million for another exceptional weekend for the Darren Aronofsky Golden Globe nominated movie.

In 6th and 7th place we’ll get the rather expensive ($100 million budget) romantic comedy How Do You Know with $11 million while Tangled should make $9 million

The Tourist in 8th place with $8 million while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 in 9th with what should be $5 million for a new total of $267 million. This is barely going to get to $290 million, let alone the $301.9 of the previous entry.

Unstoppable is going to finish the top 10 with $2 million and we are getting ready for Christmas next week with Little Fockers, True Grit and Gulliver’s Travels.

Read similar posts to Tron: Legacy gets ready to win the weekend at Filmonic

3rd Narnia and The Tourist disappoint at the box office (Dec. 10-12)

Movie News

Black Swan

Box Office

Box Office Results

Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

Tangled

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treade

The Tourist

Unstoppable

Another bad weekend at the box office, a lot was expected from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Tourist, definitely neither managed to deliver on those expectations but more after the break. Not all is doomed for Narnia since it did manage a decent $80 million outside North America for a worldwide of $110.8 million (including Tuesday). Considering the $155 million budget, Voyage of the Dawn Treader needs to make at least $300 million for Fox to even consider thinking about a 4th movie. So people, if you want to see The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair made into a movie, go see this one because otherwise Narnia is dead.

The Tourist, even with already low expectations, didn’t manage to deliver any kind of goods, $16.4 million is not something you want from a movie starring two of the biggest stars right now. This is at $26.2 million worldwide on a $100 million budget and will need a lot of good will from people during this holiday season in order to turn a profit. It seems the Foreign Press Association already gave it enough of that making The Tourist, the movie with the lowest RottenTomatoes rating (19%) to ever be nominated for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes. But one nomination wasn’t enough, it got 3, talk about mixed reception.

Tangled was 3rd, down only $33.7 million from last weekend with $14.3 million and $117.2 million in 21 days.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 (second longest movie title in this post) was 4th with $8.4 million and at $259.1 million in 24 days, it’s starting to lag behind Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince more and more. A worldwide tally of $781 million (in case anyone was still wondering) means Harry Potter is still a hot franchise but with the final movie coming next year, Warner is going to need a replacement very soon

5th was Unstoppable with $3.7 million while the real wonder of the weekend was Black Swan, a movie that made the top 10 while playing in only 90 theaters (compared to the 2000+ the competition has). 90 theaters and it made $3.3 million, enough for 6th place on this slow weekend.

Next up, Yogi Bear, Tron: Legacy, How do You Know, Black Swan and The Fighter going wide, this might finally start to come around.

Read similar posts to 3rd Narnia and The Tourist disappoint at the box office (Dec. 10-12) at Filmonic

The Golden Globes wing it

Awards Season

Angelina Jolie

Golden Globes

Halle Berry

Johnny Depp

Mark Wahlberg

The Tourist

Is it just me or does it seem like the Golden Globes are winging it this year? The only surprises here are Mark Wahlberg’s nomination for The Fighter (suggesting that Marky Mark’s performance in The Departed probably wasn’t a fluke and he might have some acting chops after all) and Halle Berry popping up out of nowhere to grab one for Frankie and Alice.

The fact that there is a surprise in the Best Actress in a Drama category actually isn’t all that surprising, seeing as Julianne Moore and Annette Bening are hanging out in the Comedy/Musical category for their coupled performance as lesbians mothers in The Kids Are All Right, leaving room for someone unexpected to fill in the Drama ballots.

Speaking of the Comedy/Musical nominations – who came up with these? There is an awful lot to scratch your head about, namely the Johnny Depp vehicles, Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Depp and eagerly await each one of his films, but I’m not delusional enough to think every single performance of his is award-caliber; yet he managed to get nominated for both of his this year. Let’s face facts: while his Mad Hatter rendition was giggle-worthy, it was his eyebrows that stole the show. And The Tourist? Well…no one is even too sure what qualifies it as a Comedy/Musical in the first place, never mind how it grabbed Best Actress, Actor, and Picture nominations. It currently sits at 19% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Of course, the Golden Globes don’t exactly have a great track record in predicting who will come out on top at the Oscars, so they can’t be taken too seriously. Hopefully the upcoming SAG nominations will clarify things a bit.

Click here to see the full list of nominees!

Read similar posts to The Golden Globes wing it at Filmonic

Voyage versus Tourist

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Burlesque

Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

Tangled

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treade

The Tourist

Unstoppable

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (and I thought the latest Potter film had a long title) and The Tourist are the new movies opening wide this weekend at the box office. So, can the 3rd journey to Narnia take the number one spot or will Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp have something to say in that regard, right after the break.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has been a long time coming and there was a time when there were serious doubts we would even see this 3rd entry in the C.S. Lewis adapted series. When Disney dropped Narnia because Prince Caspian failed to deliver on the level of their expectations ($419 million worldwide on a $225 million budget compared to the first movie that made $745 million on a $180 million budget), Walden Media (owners of the Narnia movie franchise) found a new home for Voyage of the Dawn Treader at 20th Century Fox. Fox cut the budget to $150 million, moved the production to Australia where it was filmed from July to November 2009 and later, in February 2010, decided to convert it to 3D because of the success of Avatar with the format. Coming out in 3555 theaters The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has a real shot at glory, maybe not on the same level as the first movie in the series but probably still enough to get a 4th one off the ground. I’m expecting $41 million for Narnia 3 and with the help of the upcoming holiday weekends it should grab more money then Prince Caspian in North America ($141.6 million).

On to the next flick, The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, no doubt two of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now. It should be pretty clear that expectations are not low for this movie considering the cast, but is star power really enough to push a movie to box office glory in this days? Personally I’m not seeing more then $22 million for The Tourist, so no real competition for Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Sorry Mr. Depp, better luck next summer with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (not like he will need it, oh, and trailer this Monday, don’t miss it).

And we are back to holdovers once again, basically Tangled and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 because everything else is really on the down low. $14 million for Tangled and 3rd place and $9 million for Harry Potter 7 and 4th place. In 5th place we’re getting either Burlesque or Unstoppable with something between $3 and $4 million, so nothing to write home about.

Next week we take on Tron Legacy, How do you Know and Yogi Bear, it’s going to really be something considering a year ago on that same slot we got a little movie called Avatar.

Read similar posts to Voyage versus Tourist at Filmonic

Review: The Tourist

Movie Reviews

Angelina Jolie

Johnny Depp

Paul Bettany

The Tourist

It seems that the campy approach isn’t just limited to horror and comedy flicks anymore. Over the last few years, the campy element has been inserted in all genres and The Tourist is no exception. A remake of the 2005 French film titled Anthony Zimmer, the 104 minute American product goes light on the mood and old-school with regards to the production qualities.

Elise (Angelina Jolie) is roaming around France as covert British financial crimes division monitor her every move. The reason for all this attention, Elise is the lover of an elusive financial criminal named Alexander Pierce. He is wanted in fourteen countries by federal authorities, Interpol and even the local police. Not so hot on Pierce’s trail is Agent Acheson (Paul Bettany). After years of unsuccessful stings – which has cost his agency millions of pounds – his superior Chief Jones (Timothy Dalton) is ready to pull the plug on the whole operation. However, Acheson is given one last chance and believes that Elise is about to reunited with her long lost lover. Problem is, no one knows what he truly looks like anymore.

Pierce has always been one-step ahead of Acheson and his agency though. By slipping random notes to Elise via numerous carriers, his latest instructions – or smokescreen – is for Elise to find someone who looks just like him and trick Acheson’s team in thinking that they have him located. Elise chooses unsuspecting tourist Frank Tupelo (Johnny Depp). A math teacher on holiday in Venice, Italy, Frank instantly falls to the charm of Elise and follows her around like a little puppy. As Elise executes Pierce’s plan to perfection, Frank becomes a target. However, Pierce has wronged more people than just the government in his life. He has looted the ruthless Russian mobster Ivan Demidov (Steven Berkoff) as well. Upon learning of Pierce’s reappearance in Venice, the criminal lord sends his men to snag Frank.

So this turns into a nice little cat-and-mouse game with Frank playing the familiar innocent victim who just wants to win the heart of Elise. Of course, the real hook to the story…Who is Pierce and when will he make his grand entrance? This flick is pretty much The Thomas Crown Affair with more mystery. It can also feel like a mature and/or polished Pink Panther caper during the lighter moments. Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (can you think of a more arrogant name) doesn’t tip the scales in favor of seriousness or campy. Instead he finds a compromise by keeping the tone of the script straight-forward with the obvious foreshadowing twist at the end.

Which can be appealing if the performances can stay coherent enough so the audience can buy into them. A flick that comes to mind that manages to keep the plot engaging and the performances campy is Ocean’s Eleven. Tourist flashes the same personality of an Ocean’s flick. Yet the amount of flashes are more in line of friends taking pictures of a local band rather than the Super bowl kickoff. The characters are just not as crisp and/or lively. What hampers this flick is that it only has a small handful of players that are interesting. Add in the retro-pacing and the bare-bones action sequences, the audience could be forgetting this flick by the time they get to their car. Or before the credits. Frequent fans of this genre will have a solid chance of guessing how this will turn out. That said, the goal of this story is have one second guessing themselves. And they do achieve that response.

Once the story concludes, the performances start to make more sense. This aspect actually enables this flick to have replay value, if one couldn’t see where this is heading. Enough intriguing sequences qualify this as a thriller. Well, a thriller by 1960s standards. Thankfully, the Russian mob angle is highlighted just enough and stops the repetitive torture of seeing Angelina constantly give a stripper-stare to Johnny Depp and all the supporting players. Speaking of the enigma character actor, seeing Depp play a normal role took some adjusting to. Once he is allowed to break out of the restraints of being boring, Depp slowly becomes the main attraction.

Overall, The Tourist is a conservative piece that tries to be playful. Having said that, the crew probably needed to extend recess time. One will find moments that are just uneventful. Similar to being on a guided tour. A few stops along the way are worthless but occasionally something interesting keeps your mind involved. Sticking with the guided tour comparison, this flick is more a tour of the plain Australian outback as opposed to the eye-catching ruins of the Roman Empire.

Rating: 3 out of 5

Read similar posts to Review: The Tourist at Filmonic

New trailer for The Tourist

Movie News

Angelina Jolie

Johnny Depp

The Tourist

Columbia has released a new, shorter trailer for The Tourist following the debut of the first trailer a few weeks ago. Elise (Jolie) is an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path in order to mislead all those following her former lover.
