In December we were given a list of 15 movies that were in consideration for the 2008 Visual Effects Oscar, and now that list has been narrowed down to 7.

Here is the list in alphabetical order:

Australia
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Iron Man
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

On January 15th members of the visual effects branch will watch excerpts from the movies, and the list will then be narrowed down to 3. The winner will then be announced during the award ceremony on January 22nd.

Last years winner was The Golden Compass

As well as announcing Hugh Jackman as the new host for next February’s Oscars, the Academy have revealed the 15 movies in the running for the 2008 visual effects Oscar.

Here is the list in alphabetical order:

This award is probably the one people care about the most, seeing as though this category contains movies people actually see.

In early January the list will be narrowed down to 7, then on January 15th members of the visual effects branch will watch excerpts from the movies, and the list will be narrowed down to 3.

A few days ago it was thought that The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor would knock The Dark Knight off the top spot, however it now appears Christian Bale and friends will reign supreme again by taking $43.8 million, narrowly beat Brendan Fraser and Jet Li’s predicted $42.5 million.

To put those numbers in perspective, the third “Mummy” movie grossed less its opening weekend than the original movie in 1999, while The Dark Knight made more in its THIRD weekend than Tim Burton’s Batman made its opening weekend 19 years ago.

Pineapple Express will be the competition next week. Can The Dark Knight make it 4 weeks on top?

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, staring Brendan Fraser, Maria Bello and Jet Li, is expected to knock The Dark Knight off of the top spot when it is released this weekend. Batman has enjoyed the #1 spot for the last two weeks but The Mummy is expected to take around $50 million, a few million more than what is expected from The Dark Knight.

Although Batman will be de-throned, no other film has grossed as much as quickly as The Dark Knight. The film is expected to hit the $500 million worldwide mark over the weekend, and will soon be overtaking Iron Man to be crowned the top comic book movie of 2008.

I’m still not very excited about seeing this movie. I mean, they couldn’t find a way to bring back Imhotep? And replacing Rachel Weisz was NOT a good move. They should have found a way to kill off her character or something.

And here, we have yet another The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor trailer. This one adds a bunch of new scenes that we haven’t seen before, including a glimpse at Rick and Evelyn’s son, Alex (who looks like he’s in his 20s now… and is played, in fact, by 26 year old Luke Ford).

Still don’t know how I feel about this without Rachel Weisz!

The trailer first came online around 8 hours ago on a crappy small low quality Yahoo! player. Tip to Universal: Never to that again. After hours of waiting it has finally been upgraded to HD, the way trailers should be seen!

The trailer is quite good. Lots of action, wierd ice monsters and wide shots of huge armies charging towards each other. However, it just doesn’t feel right seeing Maria Bello playing Evelyn. When Rachel Weisz said she wouldn’t return because the script was crap, they should have said that the character died or went back to London to drink tea. Re-casts hardly ever work well.

NBCU and cable network FX have penned a deal worth $100 million for first viewing rights to 15 titles from Universal’s 2008 line-up.  This is NBCU’s first deal of its kind with a basic cable network!

Included in the deal: Judd Appatow’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Angelina Jolie’s Wanted, and George Clooney’s Leatherheads. Also part of the agreement are upcoming films The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, with Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello; Hellboy II: The Golden Army, starring Ron Perlman and Selma Blair; Death Race, featuring Jason Statham and Joan Allen; Dennis Quaid starrer The Express; Clint Eastwood’s Changeling; Baby Mama, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler; and The Strangers, with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. The pact also includes the recently released films Definitely, Maybe and Doomsday.

The movies will be available for showing on the network sometime in 2010, about 28-30 months after the theatrical releases.

Actress Maria Bello spoke to MTV about The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. She is playing the role of Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell, who was played by Rachel Weisz in the previous films.

“I think Rachel is so brilliant, and she was beautiful in that part, but they wrote my character so differently, I felt like it was a totally different woman,” Bello said. “She has the same name, but she’s quite a different character.”

“In the beginning of the movie I do a sword fight with an invisible mummy,” Bello said. “I had to be on wires and do sword work. It took days to do, and it was so much fun. I would do flips on the wire and I’d land down and be like a little kid.”

I don’t really like re-casting roles, it doesn’t look the same. (Duh!) But I can understand why Rachel decided not to rejoin Brendan Fraser for more Mummy adventures. I mean if you win an Oscar you don’t want to go back to some popcorn movies you did 5 years ago. You want to look forward to the future and do more Oscar worthy movies like The Lovely Bones with Peter Jackson. But Rachel’s departure didn’t stop the franchise, in fact its actually gaining steam, as Maria Bello tells us.

Bello admits to having so much fun, in fact, that she’s looking forward to three more “Mummy” movies, confessing that she’s already signed on for a whole trilogy of sequels.

“I don’t know when, but it’s going,” she said. “[There will] absolutely be ‘The Mummy 4.’ “

And when there is, Bello says she’s already got an idea for where it can film.

“Something that takes place in the Amazon,” Bello suggested.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor will be on the big screen in August.
