Last years winner was The Golden Compass

As well as announcing Hugh Jackman as the new host for next February’s Oscars, the Academy have revealed the 15 movies in the running for the 2008 visual effects Oscar.

Here is the list in alphabetical order:
Australia
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Cloverfield
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Hancock
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
The Incredible Hulk
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Iron Man
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Quantum of Solace
The Spiderwick Chronicles

This award is probably the one people care about the most, seeing as though this category contains movies people actually see.

In early January the list will be narrowed down to 7, then on January 15th members of the visual effects branch will watch excerpts from the movies, and the list will be narrowed down to 3.

Along with a sudden rush of trailers, we are also getting a surge in new posters. Earlier this year at Comic Con Hugh Jackman revealed some footage which, as expected, leaked online. It was swiftly removed (unless you know where to look) however soon we will get our first real look at X-Men Origins: Wolverine in the form of a non-blurry, high definition teaser trailer.

XMF can “exclusively” confirm that 20th Century Fox is hoping to release the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine trailer with December 12th’s “The Day The Earth Stood Still”!

“We are shooting for 12/12 on DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL now…” said the studio in a statement.

According to my calculations December 12th is around 5 weeks away. Write it down or carve it into a nearby wall!

If you have a spare five minutes you may be interested in watching a new super long trailer for The Day the Earth Stood Still. I wouldn’t say I’m excited for this but it does look somewhat interesting. The effects look rather cool and you can tell 20th Century Fox have thrown some money at it. But then again, I once threw money at a hooker and it wasn’t very good.

The Day the Earth Stood Still will be released on December 12th.

The trailer for The Day the Earth Stood Still is now online. It is a remake of the 1950′s movie of the same title and stars Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly.

Looks quite interesting. Keanu Reeves is born for the part, they needed an actor who shows no emotion and he fits that bill perfectly. They should rename the movie to The Day Keanu Reeves Face Stayed Still. Much better title.

Update: Trailer seems to be have removed from the face of the internet. I don’t think Fox want to promote their movies.

Variety are reporting that Jennifer Connelly has signed on to star in the 1951 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Connelly will be joining Keanu Reeves in the story of aliens coming to earth and delivering a message. Live in peace or be destroyed.

Sounds fun.  I have not seen the 1951 film, like most of the population under the age of 25, so this news doesn’t fill me with any emotion whatsoever. I just know Connelly is a good actress and Reeves will probably do the film justice…whatever it involves. I wonder how they will modernize it so it doesn’t come off cheesy. I mean the aliens don’t really need to come and tell them, just communicate with their advanced technology. Or will it be like Armageddon where they randomly appear and destroy things. I also don’t get what the aliens are saying, because they are sending mixed signals. Its like telling a murderer to stop murdering or else you will kill them.

I will have to wait and see, or if anyone can explain it too me I would appreciate it!

As with most movies, it will start filming next month and is directed by Scott Derrickson. By that I dont mean Derrickson directed most movies, I mean because of the strike and everything.
