Unfortunately compared to something like Monsters vs Aliens (another DreamWorks Animation movie) that opened on the same date one year ago to $59.3 million, this doesn’t look that impressive. It had more 3D screens and even higher priced tickets so ultimate it looks like audiences just weren’t that attracted by the premise of the movie in the first place.

Alice in Wonderland managed to score a higher then expected $17.7 million even after loosing a big portion of its 3D screens. Now this flick stands at $293.5 million in North America and a total of $658.5 million worldwide. Someone important at Disney must be hosting a very expensive party right now.

Hot Tub Machine opened on the low end of expectations with $14 million. But if audience embrace it then it might have long legs at the box office and go on to gross North of $50 million.

The Bounty Hunter proves to be a favorite among audiences, starting $2 million slower then Diary of a Wimpy Kid, it now stands at $38.4 million in total compared to $35.8 million. The Gerard Butler and Jeniffer Aniston flick generated $12 million this weekend in third place while Diary of a Wimpy Kid made a more modest but still impressive $10.1 million.

And now we go really down for the rest of the top 10, She’s Out of My League, $3.5 million, good drop, modest hit, $25.5 million so far on a $20 million budget. Green Zone, $3.3 million, $100 million budget and only $30.4 million ($59.6 million worldwide).

Shutter Island continues an impressive run with $3.1 million now at number 8th and at $120 million is getting ever so close to Scorsese’s highest grossing movie, The Departed with $130 million. I still have my doubts that it will manage to surpass that one, regardless it’s a hit for Paramount and another successful collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese.

And finally Repo Man and Our Family Wedding in 9th and 10th place. Repo Man even with a modest $32 million budget is turning into a failure, $3 million this weekend and only $11.3 million so far. The other one did $2.3 million and $16.9 million so far.

Am I missing something? Wait a minute, where is Avatar? Oh yeah, after 15 weeks that gigantic box office monster finally decided to leave the top 10, damn, now that’s what I call a box office run, $740.4 million in North America and another $1.94 billion in the rest of the world for a worldwide total of $2.68 billion, that’s exactly what the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy managed to make in total (unadjusted for inflation).

How to Train Your Dragon $43.7M (NEW)

Alice in Wonderland $17.7M ($293.5M)

Hot Tub Time Machine $14M (NEW)

The Bounty Hunter $12M ($38.4M)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid $10.1M ($35.8M)

She’s Out of My League $3.5M ($25.5M)

Green Zone $3.3M ($30.4M)

Shutter Island $3.1M ($120.6M)

Repo Man $3M ($11.3M)

Our Family Wedding $2.3M ($16.9M)

Read similar posts to How to Train Your Dragon burned the box office (Mar.26-28) on Filmonic

Alice still in Wonderland at the box office (Mar.19-21)

Movie News

Alice in Wonderland

Box Office

Box Office Results

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Green Zone

Repo Man

The Bounty Hunter

Another weekend, more Alice, this time with $34.1 million, down 45.5% but overall business was up 20% from the same timeframe last year according to BoxOfficeMojo. Well this is the 6th third weekend ever and brings Alice in Wonderland to a US total of $265.4 million, kind of a big deal for Tim Burton since this just became his biggest hit ever (unadjusted for inflation, Batman from 1989 made $251.1 million). Its also his 11th fastest movie to get to $250 million, Alice did it in 16 days (on Saturday). Right now this stands at $565.4 million worldwide, more then any other Tim Burton movie ever. Looking back, besides the freak that was Avatar, Alice is the only movie to stay first for 3 weekends since August 29-31 2008 when Tropic Thunder was on top of the box office for a third week.

In second place we have a very surprising Diary of a Wimpy Kid with $22.1 million, more then enough for Fox to start a franchise based on this children’s book series. I figure with this kind of start Wimpy should go on to make around $45-$50 million in the US, a lot more then the $15 million budget this had and is leaps and bounds over similarly themed movies when it comes to box office.

The Bounty Hunter scores an impressive $20.6 million yet the closer I look at it the less impressive it actually seems coming from two bankable actors that scored much bigger hits in this genre.

Repo Man was as expected, dead on arrival with just $6.1 million while Green Zone in 5th place will surely go down as one of Universal’s biggest bombs of the year with $6.1 million and just $24.8 million in total, all of that on a $100 million budget. Now I know previous collaborations from Paul Grengrass and Matt Damon have scored two major hits for Universal but seriously, next time before they green light a similarly themed movie they should do some better budget management because this is just ridiculous.

For She’s Out of My League I’m not worried in any way because while this is in 6th place with $5.8 million and $19.7 in total, it only cost $20 million and will see far more success on DVD and Blu-Ray then something like Green Zone.

Shutter Island and Avatar are neck a neck in 7th and 8th place with $4.7 and $4 million, well, they are neck a neck as long as you don’t look at their totals, $115.7 million and $736.9 million ($2.66 billion worldwide).

Our Family Wedding and Remember Me finish the top 10 and by this time next week we won’t remember either.

Here’s a look at the top 10:

Alice in Wonderland (BuenaVista) $34.1M ($265.4M)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Fox) $22.1M (NEW)

The Bounty Hunter (Sony) $20.6M (NEW)

Repo Man (Universal) $6.1M (NEW)

Green Zone (Universal) $6.1M ($24.8M)

She’s Out of My League (Paramount) $5.8M ($19.7M)

Shutter Island (Paramount) $4.7M ($115.7M)

Avatar (Fox) $4M ($736.9M)

Our Family Wedding (FoxSearchlight) $3.7M ($13.6M)

Remember Me (Summit) $3.2M ($13.9M)

Read similar posts to Alice still in Wonderland at the box office (Mar.19-21) on Filmonic

Bounty Hunter goes after Alice

Movie News

Alice in Wonderland

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Repo Man

The Bounty Hunter

The Bounty Hunter goes after first place this weekend but Alice in Wonderland is here to stay for a 3rd consecutive win. After the amazing hold it managed a week ago I can only expect good things from the last big 3D weekend of Alice (How to Train Your Dragon opens wide in 3D next Friday).

Lets find out what we can expect from the wide releases this weekend, The Bounty Hunter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Repo Man and also The Ghost Writer going wide after one month in limited release.

The Bounty Hunter opens in 3,074 theaters and is an action-comedy from Sony-Columbia starring Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston. PG-13, 106 minutes and an awful 7% rating on RottenTomatoes. Even so I expect around $20 million from it this weekend, both Butler and Aniston are bankable actors and regardless of what critics have to say people will come see them.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid opening in 3077 theaters seems to be a somewhat better received movie by the media with 52% on RottenTomatoes. This is based on a bestselling source material and stars a few actors that I can’t really call bankable in any way. Personally I haven’t even seen a full trailer for this movie but based on the way Fox has been pushing it lately I guess this could open around $14 million.

And then comes Repo Man, a Sci-Fi action movie starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker that I think won’t hit the mark Universal expected from it. The ratings don’t help either, 21% on RottenTomatoes. From all the new comers this weekend Repo would probably be the only one I’d pay to see (but I won’t) and I think I’m not alone in thinking this (and who knows, some people might actually go), unfortunately this looks to be dead on arrival, $10-$12 million.

The Ghost Writer might crack the top 10 this with the 819 theaters it will have starting Friday.

Here’s a rundown of what the top 5 might look like:

Alice in Wonderland (BuenaVista) $42M ($273.2M)

The Bounty Hunter (Sony-Columbia) $21M (NEW)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Fox) $13.5M (NEW)

Repo Man (Universal) $12M (NEW)

Green Zone (Universal) $6.5M ($25.2M)

What are your thoughts on the top 5 this weekend?

Read similar posts to Bounty Hunter goes after Alice on Filmonic
