It looked like Sin City 2 was finally edging towards production late last year when William Monahan, who won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for The Departed, was brought in to re-write the script.

Now, after many years, the sequel to Sin City is finally moving forward and will begin shooting this summer with the title Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, along with producer Alexander Rodnyansky, have announced that production will commence on the highly anticipated sequel to 2005’s Sin City, entitled Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. The film will be produced by AR Films and Quick Draw Productions, financed through AR Films U.S and released domestically by Dimension Films.

“The first question I am always asked is “When will you make another Sin City? ,” said Rodriquez. “I have wanted to re-team with Frank Miller and return to the world he created since the day we wrapped the original, but have felt a duty to the fans to wait until we had something truly exceptional that would meet and exceed what have become epic expectations. A Dame To Kill For will certainly be worth the wait.”

Sin City creator, screenwriter and co-director Frank Miller said, “The first Sin City knocked out audiences who had never seen anything like it before. Robert Rodriguez and I are going to shake things up and deliver a ferocious film experience that is going to go even further than the first.“

The script and details of the film’s story have been kept tightly under wraps. Casting will begin next week, with many of the original cast expected to return. The film, a Quick Draw Production, will be produced by Rodriguez and producing partners Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic; and by Alexander Rodnyansky and Sergei Bespalov and Stephen L’Hereux. Miller, The Weinstein Company’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein and Miramax’s Adam Fields will act as executive producers. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Frank Miller and Academy Award winner William Monahan (The Departed). The film is expected to begin production this summer at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

Alexander Rodnyansky said, “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Robert Rodriguez and Quick Draw Productions. It is a rare opportunity to produce and finance a film with the high profile and enormous fan base of the Sin City franchise. AR FIlms will be managing worldwide sales of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, as well as Robert’s Machete Kills at the Cannes Film Festival in May.”

The original Sin City was brought to the screen by Rodriguez and Miller and released by Dimension in 2005, and proved to be a landmark step forward in filmmaking, breaking ground with immersive green screen to create its iconic stylish look. The first film, released on April 1, 2005, grossed over $160 million (US) worldwide and is a consistently strong home video and television performer.

“Audiences have been clamoring for Sin City 2 with Robert and Frank for a long time and trust me, it will be worth the wait,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company. “This will be my 11th collaboration with Robert in 16 years and he’s become a great friend. I look forward to continuing our long lasting relationship and partnering on more projects in the future.”

In 2008 they were apparently “close to beginning production”, then they were planning to shoot in 2009, and last year we heard the script was being re-written. The latest update came in July when Rodriguez said “it could shoot as early as later this year”, and it looks like they’re aiming for that by getting a script ready with the help of Monahan.

Rodriguez confirmed one of the stories being used in the sequel is “A Dame to Kill For,” another is called “The Long Bad Night,” and the third is being kept under wraps for now. At present no actors are confirmed to return, but the Dame to Kill For story features Marv (Mickey Rourke) and Nancy (Jessica Alba).

Well Robert Rodriguez gave another update at the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday, and he said “it could shoot as early as later this year.”

That isn’t looking likely, however Rodriguez has confirmed yet again that Sin City 2 will happen and he is planning on re-working the script.

The film-maker, who will next make a Spy Kids sequel in September, told Digital Spy that he is still hoping to direct the follow-up to his 2005 adaptation of Frank Miller’s popular Dark Horse comic.

“We’re still working on Sin City, I want to do it so we’ll see. It’s just a matter of when,” said Rodriguez.

“We have a script… a rewritten script that we still have to write and it’s just finding the right time slot to do it.”

Rodriguez has always found something to keep him busy, whether it be directing Grindhouse, Shorts, Machete and Spy Kids 4 or producing movies such as Predators. He was most recently linked to Deadpool which, if he decided to take on, would probably keep him busy for a year or two after he has finished Spy Kids.

I don’t expect to see Sin City 2 anytime soon, so I won’t hold my breath.

L’Heureux confirmed for us that the long-awaited sequel ‘Sin City 2′ will go into production in the second half of 2010. Unlike the first movie, which used the graphic novels as both screenplay and story boards, the sequel will be based on an original script by Miller. As with the original, Miller will co-direct with Robert Rodriguez.

Earlier this year 300 and Watchmen director Zack Synder said that Frank Miller was busy writing and drawing the graphic novel that the sequel to 300 will be based on, and that it would take place between the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Plataea (the big battle we got a taste of at the end of 300). Unless things have changed this means Gerard Butler won’t be returning as King Leonidas, as he was getting impaled by quite a few spears the last time we saw him. However, Butler recently told MTV that he would be up for returning, if they need him.

“I had an incredible time doing the first one, and I think that if the first one was a stand-alone, as a one-off, there’s no bad thing in that,” explained Gerard Butler when we caught up with him recently, saying he’d be willing to bring his character back to life—even if it meant re-animating arguably the most dead person in movie history (remember all those spears?). “But, you know, let’s see what it might bring forward with a second one.”

Butler also dropped a small nugget of info about possibly appearing in Sin City 3:

“I could see myself working with Frank again,” explained the “Law Abiding Citizen” star. “But, I don’t know. Graphic novels are things that I wouldn’t do a lot of, so I would have to really choose carefully before I did.”

“At one point, he talked to me about one of the ‘Sin City’ [movies],” explained the actor, possibly revealing some casting details for whenever Miller and Robert Rodriguez get around to filming their supposed sequels to the gritty 2005 graphic novel-turned-blockbuster. “And we discussed that.” Although Butler didn’t reveal his character’s name, he reported that Miller wanted him not for this next film, but likely for the one after that.

“There’s a kind of cool character I think in the third one,” Butler revealed, “But it was all very kind of soft talk.”

Gerard Butler appearing in Sin City 3 would be quite cool, although they need to make the second movie first. The latest we’ve heard is that it could start filming next year, however nothing is official yet.

It’s been 4 long years since Sin City hit our screens and ever since then we’ve been hearing that the sequel is coming…eventually. However, this time it seems it might actually be happening, as Robert Rodriquez spoke to IGN and revealed that he has recently been speaking to “some of the players” and filming could begin as early as next year.

“People have been talking about Sin City 2 since the first one came out,” Rodriguez said. “Whenever I’m out and about, people say, ‘When’s Sin City 2 coming? When’s Sin City 2 coming?’ They’ve been asking that for years. So this probably will add to that, certainly.”

Rodriguez added that he had a few other commitments he had to complete before moving on to Sin City 2, but he is beginning talks with his creative team and could begin filming as early as next year.

“I actually had a phone call with some of the players in it today, but I was on a plane so I missed it,” he said. “So next week we’re going to talk about it some more and get a timing on when we’d be doing it. But there’s a lot of people who are interested in it. … We are definitely going to do that one.

As for the story in the film, Rodriguez said that it will include the Sin City story “A Dame to Kill For” as well as new additional material written by Miller himself.

“There’s a lot of stories,” Rodriguez said. “That was sort of the approach I took to it. That’s why there’s three stories in the [first] movie, because I thought, ‘I love this material, but gosh, what happens if it’s not successful and I don’t get to make a part two and part three. I still want to see “The Big Fat Kill” and “That Yellow Bastard.”‘ So I wanted to put them all in one movie so I could at least get some of these stories out of my system. But there’s still so many books and so many stories to do.”

I would love nothing more than to see filming finally begin on the sequel, but until we get casting news and a start date I advise we stay cautiously optimistic.

The last we heard on Sin City 2 was that the script had been written, and Frank Miller said filming could begin in April. Well it is now March and is doesn’t look like filming will begin any time soon, however Rosario Dawson told MTV that filming could till take place this year.

“Yeah, I talked to Robert [Rodriguez] and Frank [Miller],” she said of a recent conversation with the director and writer who joined forces with Quentin Tarantino for the hit 2005 film. “They actually just finished the script for ‘Sin City 2’ a few months ago.”

“There’s talks about it shooting sometime this year.”

If they intend to start filming this year we should start hearing some casting buzz over the upcoming months.

Frank Miller, director of The Spirit and one of the directors of Sin City, spoke to IGN and revealed that Sin City 2 is edging closer to being made, nearly 4 years after we got the first film.

“Sin City 2 is written,” he told the site. “It’s mainly a matter of working out the details of the production. I’m hoping to do it with Robert Rodriguez again in the same circumstances that we did the first one, and we could be shooting as soon as April.”

No word on cast details yet, although if they do end up shooting in April we should be getting more info over the next few months.

Today Frank Miller was in Rome presenting new scenes from The Spirit. He revealed a brand new trailer which showed some new scenes, including Eva Mendes’ naked butt and some action clips. Frank Miller also spoke about his future projects, which I am sure many are glad to hear involves Sin City 2.

I cant’ talk about my projects, because I don’t believe a movie is real until I see the title on the screen. There are many things that can go wrong. But I can tell you that I’m very close to begin Sin City 2 with Robert Rodriguez. We have to arrange a few things and we’ll be back in action.

I know fans have been waiting for Sin City 2 for some time (well since Sin City came out 3 years ago), and now it seems things are in the works!
