And while it’s too early to tell if that’ll end up happening or not, the producers of the film want to put the rumors to rest.

Andrew Kosove is one of the bigwigs at Alcon Entertainment, the company that’s producing and financing Scott’s upcoming return to the Blade Runner universe. Kosove spoke with Mike Fleming at Deadline to squash the recent rumors and give an update on where they are with the movie so far:

“It is absolutely patently false that there has been any discussion about Harrison Ford being in Blade Runner,” Kosove told me. “To be clear, what we are trying to do with Ridley now is go through the painstaking process of trying to break the back of the story, figure out the direction we’re going to take the movie and find a writer to work on it. The casting of the movie could not be further from our minds at this moment.”

Kosove, one of the heads of Alcon, also seemed to shoot down the idea of a direct sequel, comparing the new Blade Runner project with Prometheus.

“What Ridley does in Prometheus is a good template for what we’re trying to do. He created something that has some association to the original Alien, but lives on its own as a standalone movie.”

So now we’re right back where we started – with almost no information about the project at all. All we know is that Ford could return, but it’s too early to speculate. Does this news give your inner sci-fi geek a sigh of relief, or do you wish Ford was totally committed to the project?

Read similar posts to Producers say Harrison Ford is not in discussions for new Blade Runner at Filmonic

Harrison Ford may join Ridley Scott’s new Blade Runner

Movie News

Blade Runner

Blade Runner sequel

Harrison Ford

Ridley Scott

With Ridley Scott revisiting the world of Alien with Prometheus later this summer, it wasn’t that much of a shock to hear the director was planning a similar return to the equally iconic world of Blade Runner. Now, Twitch is hearing word that Harrison Ford “is in early talks” to join Sir Ridley in the sci-fi universe once again.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, it’s great to get the original creative team working together again and it would be amazing to see what kind of story they could tell with today’s technology. But on the other hand, Ford’s involvement will likely answer the “is Deckard a Replicant?” question once and for all, and I’m not so sure that’s a good thing. Yes, your curiosity may be slaked, but a big part of the reason the original Blade Runner has stood the test of time through pop culture has been the argument about the ending of the movie. I can’t see any way for Scott and Co. to dance around the answer to that question for the entirety of another movie, so that means the filmmakers are forcing their perspectives on us and robbing us one of the best things films provide: the passionate discussion that comes from ambiguity.

What do you think?

Read similar posts to Harrison Ford may join Ridley Scott’s new Blade Runner at Filmonic

Ridley Scott may direct Cormac McCarthy’s The Counselor

Movie News

Cormac McCarthy

Prometheus

Ridley Scott

The Counselor

What’s next for Ridley Scott after this summer’s highly-anticipated Prometheus? Read more after the jump.

McCarthy’s novels have been turned into films before: The Road, All the Pretty Horses, and the Best Picture-winning No Country For Old Men. But they’ve always been adapted to the big screen by somebody else; The Counselor is the first feature script McCarthy has ever sold, and directing the Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s screenplay is a coveted job in Hollywood.

The story follows an admired lawyer who is tempted by the drug business and ends up getting in over his head. Steve Schwartz, one of the movie’s producers, gave us a little more detail about what to expect:

Since McCarthy himself wrote the script, we get his own muscular prose directly, with its sexual obsessions. It’s a masculine world into which, unusually, two women intrude to play leading roles. McCarthy’s wit and humor in the dialogue make the nightmare even scarier. This may be one of McCarthy’s most disturbing and powerful works.

Despite the underlying feeling of sameness that has permeated his recent output, Ridley Scott is still one of the most versatile directors in Hollywood. After all, this is the same guy who brought us Thelma & Louise, Alien, Gladiator, and Matchstick Men. Though it sounds like a project more suited for the Coen Brothers, I’m still interested to see Scott’s take – and I’m even more interested to see if McCarthy is as good at writing screenplays as novels.

Read similar posts to Ridley Scott may direct Cormac McCarthy’s The Counselor at Filmonic

Trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus

Movie Trailers

Charlize Theron

Guy Pearce

Idris Elba

Logan Marshall-Green

Michael Fassbender

Noomi Rapace

Patrick Wilson

Prometheus

Ridley Scott

After teasing us over the past few days 20th Century Fox has released the first official trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus which stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Logan Marshall-Green, Patrick Wilson, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Rafe Spall. It’s no surprise really, considering it’s a return to the sci-fi realm for coveted Alien and Blade Runner director Ridley Scott. That Scott is a sneaky one, with previous plot overviews only stating that it’s “a sci-fi epic,” but now we’ve finally got a new synopsis courtesy of the film’s official Facebook Page, which will surely give some closure for those us craving it. Right?

Well here it is:

Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Satisfied? Yea, OK, it really didn’t give us much to go with, but at least it somewhat gives us a little structure on how it could potentially play out, and of course getting us even more excited. Another interesting fact is that the alien creatures are connected in someway with the creation of mankind, providing an eerie backdrop for the film’s mythology. However, that rumor regarding the involvement of the skeletal creature known only of the Space Jockey briefly seen in 1979′s Alien, is still, well, just a rumor but, hey, beggars can’t be choosers. I guess.

Prometheus, produced by 20th Century Fox, stars Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Ben Foster, and Logan Marshall-Green and is set for release on June 8, 2012.

Read similar posts to New synopsis for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus reveals new info (sort of) at Filmonic

Ridley Scott signs on to direct new Blade Runner film

Movie News

Blade Runner

Ridley Scott

Earlier this year Alcon Entertainment, the production company based at Warner Bros. who are behind movies such as The Blind Side and The Book of Eli, secured film and television franchise rights to produce prequels and sequels to Ridley Scott’s iconic 1982 sci-fi thriller Blade Runner. If they’re going to make sequels/prequels, it might as well be with the director of the original.

Blade Runner starred Ford, Rutger Hauer, and Sean Young, and was based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. It is considered the greatest science-fiction film of all time by many, and currently sits at #117 on IMDB’s Top 250.

The film depicted a dystopian Los Angeles in November 2019 in which genetically engineered organic robots called replicants—visually indistinguishable from adult humans—are manufactured by the powerful Tyrell Corporation. Their use on Earth is banned, and replicants are exclusively used for dangerous, menial or leisure work on Earth’s off-world colonies. Replicants who defy the ban and return to Earth are hunted down and “retired” by police special operatives known as “Blade Runners”.

The plot focuses on a brutal and cunning group of recently escaped replicants hiding in Los Angeles and the burnt out expert blade runner, Rick Deckard, who reluctantly agrees to take on one more assignment to hunt them down.

Read similar posts to Ridley Scott signs on to direct new Blade Runner film at Filmonic

First look at Ridley Scott’s Prometheus

Movie News

Charlize Theron

Michael Fassbender

Noomi Rapace

Prometheus

Ridley Scott

20th Century Fox decided to feature Ridley Scott’s Prometheus at the San Diego Comic Con, and those in attendance were treated to a featurette containing behind-the-scenes footage as well as footage from the movie. The studio have released the first official image (see above) for those who didn’t attend, but thankfully reports of what was shown during the panel have surfaced.

AvP Galaxy compiled a great summary of the panel and the interesting bits:

- Many of the sets, spaceships, space suits and the look in general appeared very reminiscent of Alien. Repeated comments are that the sets are “epic and expansive“.
- In the footage the “Prometheus” title card slowly faded onto screen much in the same manner as the original “Alien” title.
- Michael Fassbender’s character, David, is shown looking curiously at a drop of blood on his finger.
- Charlize Theron’s character, Vickers, was also seen doing naked push-ups and wielding a flame-thrower. Vickers is revealed to “be a suit“. Theron also comments that: “She[Vickers] runs a tight ship… but she’s somehow ‘going to be a problem“.
- Ridley Scott comments on the long wait for his return to science-fiction: “I was busy doing other movies and exploring other genres and, frankly, I never thought about sci-fi until I realized there was something in the first Alien that no one ever asked a question about. In the next one, still no exploration of that big question, so maybe that can be the centerpiece of what we just complete. But we’ve decided to go a complete other direction… In the last few minutes of the movie… you’ll actually understand what I’m talking about . “

You can read the rest of the round-up here. It’s still early days yet but it looks like Ridley Scott’s return to sci-fi will be worth the wait.

Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba, and 20th Century Fox will release the film on June 8th 2012.

Read similar posts to First look at Ridley Scott’s Prometheus at Filmonic
