Ricky Gervais caused quite a stir while hosting the Golden Globes last year. He threw digs at Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie’s “two-dimensional” characters in The Tourist , made suggestions about certain Scientologists, and thought the award for Special Effects should go to whoever photoshopped the Sex and the City 2 poster.

For a while it looked like The Hollywood Foreign Press would try to avoid further controversy by going for a different host (or none at all), but it has been announced that Gervias will host the ceremony for the third time.

After weeks of rumours it’s finally official—Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Golden Globes for a third year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association voted for the controversial British comedian’s return after meeting with NBC official Doug Vaughn.

While many welcome Gervais’s return, not everyone is happy with the decision because last year his blunt one-liners targeting big-name celebrities caused anger and resentment in some quarters. After the show Gervais dismissed the possibility of coming back for a third time, but he gradually warmed to the idea and last month met with HFPA President Dr. Aida Takla-O’Reilly in Paris to discuss it. He said recently that the idea of going back behind the podium “is very tempting”.

The Golden Globes awards ceremony, which will be televised worldwide, will be held on January 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Gervias followed the news by tweeting a picture of himself with Oscar host Billy Crystal.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the duo who created The Office and Extras, are together again with a new film: Cemetery Junction. Oddly, it looks like it may be a drama and star a group of younger actors. The film is set in 1970s England and “follows the lives of three working-class friends trapped in a small town.” One of them gets a new job and reconvenes with his childhood sweetheart, causing drama among the group. It’s set for release on April 14, 2010. Here’s the trailer.

Usually Gervais stars in most of his productions, but he may be a secondary character this go round. I’m a bit puzzled, but I’ll withhold judgment. What do you guys think? Are you prepared for a drama from the creator of the BBC Office?
