Sony has announced that they will be releasing Resident Evil: Afterlife on DVD, Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray on December 28th.

Despite negative reviews the movie was helped by 3D ticket prices and made $273 million worldwide, which is an all new high for the franchise (Resident Evil: Extinction made $150 million in 2007). Obviously a Resident Evil 5 is in the works so this won’t be the last time we see Milla Jovovich running around with guns.

It wasn’t just North America up for grabs for the latest in the Resident Evil movie franchise, but the entire world.

After debuting with a series all time high $26.6 million in North America, the movie went on to bring in another $42.3 million from 30 countries, for a very impressive $68.9 million worldwide in just 3 days. A big $15.5 million opening in Japan also helped greatly.

Now back to North America where Takers and The American were neck a neck $5.6 million each, just $1371 between them. Considering the $2590 per theater average for Takers, we can assume that it took just 1 theater to create that difference and keep in mind that The American is running on a lot more screens and was in its 2nd week, not 3rd like it was the case with Takers. Anyway, great performance for this flick that came out of nowhere.

Machete in 4th place had a big drop that was to be expected from this special kind of movie. $4.2 million over the weekend and $21.8 million so far, all of this on a $20 million budget.

On the other end Going the Distance had the best hold out of the top 10, not that it helps much considering it only lead to $3.7 million on an already extremely under-performing Drew Barrymore flick that has generated only $14.7 million on a $32 million budget.

Another close battle was between The Other Guys (now on track to finish with a higher gross then Salt, 112.9 vs 116.5 as of right now) and The Last Exorcism, each with $3.3 million.

The Expendables was 8th with $3.2 million and will pass $100 million before the end of this week. Worldwide it has reached a fantastic $229 million, more then enough to pay for the upcoming sequel.

Finally Eat Prey Love and Inception close the top 10 with $2.9 and $2.8 million. Julia Roberts doesn’t seem to be out of gas yet with this movie that has made $75.3 million so far. On the other hand Inception is at 282.6 million in North America and is probably going to stop around $290 million, unfortunately just shy of $300 million. Worldwide things are going even better, $731.4 million and now every studio in town is going to beg Nolan to make something for them, worked out great for Warner so far.

Negative reviews aside, Resident Evil: Afterlife will open at the #1 spot this weekend with around $28 million (+ $45 million internationally) which is great for a budget of $60 million. Thanks to 3D ticket prices it will probably end up as the highest grossing film of the franchise.

When a franchise continues to provide the goods the makers will be more than happy to continue it, and Milla Jovovich recently revealed that is the intention.

“This new Resident Evil is the first one to ever open at number one worldwide. It’s the biggest movie in the franchise,” she told us, “So we’re definitely going to make another one,” she said, adding that director Paul W.S. Anderson, her husband, already has some ideas for the fifth Resident Evil installment, and this time he wants the audiences’ ideas, too. “We’ve been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see. It’s going to be a more interactive process.”

Anyway, by now all you guys out there (that are reading this, not just skimming, yes I’m talking about you) should know that Resident Evil: Afterlife is coming out this weekend in glorious James Cameron/Vince Pace Fusion Camera 3D, 3203 theaters no less and just like the previous 3 times, Sony and Screen Gems are bringing it to us. So Milla Jovovich is obviously back as Alice, exactly where Resident Evil: Extinction left us but what’s new is that her real life husband, writer, director and producer Paul W.S. Anderson is back in the director chair after handing the last two movies to some other guys that probably tried their best.

Another thing worthy of mentioning is Afterlife is the most expensive Resident Evil movie (and probably zombie movie for that matter) made so far, so a lot is hanging on Anderson’s back, around $60 million according to IMDB. Now don’t quote me on the most expensive zombie movie ever, but do feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, fellow zombie lovers out there.

I guess the movie should do decent business at the box office, at least opening weekend. In line with previous entries I can see this opening with $26 million or so, maybe a little more thanks to 3D but truth be told, previews did not look to good (actually some looked really bad) so my expectations are low for this one (coming from someone that enjoyed all previous Resident Evil movies).

Aside from Resident Evil: Afterlife, we’ll have The American finishing in second place with $7 million while Takers is probably going to beat Machete for 3rd place with $6 million compared to $5.5 million. Now Machete here ain’t breaking any records but it sure is doing better business than that last Robert Rodriguez movie, Shorts. Make Sin City 2 already man, come on!

Rounding out the top 5 is going to be The Expendables with $4.5 million or so, unfortunately not enough to make it pass the 100 million mark on Sunday, but it will get there either on Monday or Tuesday next week. So again, good job old timers. Oh, and Sly, when did you say the sequel is coming out?

Resident Evil was written 6 times in this post and I haven’t even mentioned the games it is based on, but I guess you guys already know enough about those and since, you know, this movies don’t exactly follow the games plot-wise, why even bother going there.

As expected the teaser trailer for Resident Evil: Afterlife made its way online today following its debut at the San Francisco WonderCon. The trailer includes shots of destroyed cities, a mention of James Cameron’s 3D technology, Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter kicking ass, and a cool little homage to The Matrix. The first official images from Resident Evil: Afterlife have been released online. The image above shows Alice (Milla Jovovich) and Claire (Ali Larter) getting all wet, which I assume is purely accidental and isn’t supposed to get fanboys all excited in any way, shape or form.

The fourth Resident Evil outing reunites Jovovich with director Paul W.S. Anderson who directed the first film (he continued to produce and write the sequels). The film will also star Wentworth Millar as Larter’s husband.

The fourth Resident Evil outing reunites Jovovich with director Paul W.S. Anderson who directed the first film (he continued to produce and write the sequels). Resident Evil: Afterlife will also star Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller, and will be 3D.
