According to Variety Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno) is in final negotiations to join Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, making him one of the last major players to join the cast. His role is said to be a small one, a gambler who buys Django’s wife, but “Tarantino was very particular on who he wanted to play it, given the character’s importance to the story.”

In the movie Django (Jamie Foxx) is a freed slave, who, under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife (Kerry Washington) and liberating her from an evil plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). Samuel L. Jackson will play DiCario’s slave, Stephen, while Kurt Russell will play the sadistic trainer Ace Woody, who forces male slaves to fight to entertain the white patrons of Candyland.

Tarantino plans to start shooting Django Unchained in New Orleans in January, and The Weinstein Company will release it on December 25, 2012.

Sacha Baron Cohen will next be seen in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, and will star in his next Bruno/Borat-style movie The Dictator next May alongside Megan Fox, Sir Ben Kingsley, Jason Mantzoukas, and Anna Faris.

When Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio were confirmed for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained there was talk of Kerry Washington (Ray, The Last King of Scotland) being in talks to play Broomhilda, Django’s wife who is sold off to entertain the white patrons of Candyland.

Now Deadline reports that Kerry Washington has landed the role, and the delay in confirmation was due to Tarantino’s interest in “making a discovery in the role, and that led to a long casting search”. However it appears he couldn’t find any upcoming talent, so went back to Washington who he had his eye on from the beginning.

The casting of Broomhilda has interested a few people who managed to read the script a few months ago. While the character is the female lead, Shadow and Act notes the role is not “the most glamorous, nor complex” as there are several scenes where Broomhilda is naked, and a few where she is being raped and whipped. The Playlist says the character is “essentially a damsel in distress…and that’s about it”, but the script may have changed slightly since, and Kerry Washington might be able to bring some depth to the role.

The cast of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained continues to expand, and the latest actor to enter talks is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. According to Variety the actor may appear in the film if he can work around “several scheduling issues that could prevent him from participating.”

No details on his potential role in the film, but if he joins he’ll be re-teaming with his Inception co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. It’ll also end a killer year for Levitt who is already starring in The Dark Knight Rises, sci-fi Looper with Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, David Koepp’s Premium Rush (recently pushed back to August), and Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln with Daniel Day-Lewis.

After offering Will Smith the lead, and considering Idris Elba, Terrence Howard and Chris Tucker, Quentin Tarantino and The Weinstein Company began talks last month with Oscar winning actor Jamie Foxx (Ray, Collateral) to star in Django Unchained.

Now in a recent interview Foxx confirmed that he’ll be part of the film, and explained briefly why he wanted the role.

“I think, just to be able to work with Quentin Tarantino and Samuel Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and to be able to tell a story that needs to be told,” he said of why he agreed to the role. “If you’re a fan of ‘Inglorious Basterds,’ I mean, you know.. It’s just amazing. It should be [an] amazing [thing].”

Negotiations with Will Smith have obviously come to nothing (presumably money/image related) and Idris Elba will be heading to the Pacific Rim with Guillermo Del Toro, so the path has now been cleared for Oscar winning actor Jamie Foxx (Ray, Collateral) to take the lead in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.

No deal has been made yet, but it shouldn’t take long. While the early focus had Will Smith the likely participant, Deadline told you on June 7 that those talks had gone south and we were first to identify Foxx as a prime contender for the role, along with Idris Elba and Chris Tucker.

According to Box Office Mojo Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained has been given a release date of December 25, 2012. Filming is scheduled to begin later this year, so all Tarantino needs to do is get the cast in place.

Last week there was speculation this was the case, and now Deadline has word that Leonardo DiCaprio is indeed in early talks for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.

Apparently DiCaprio is being courted to play a charming but ruthless proprietor of Candyland, a despicable club in Mississippi where female slaves are exploited as sex objects and males are pitted against each other in “mandingo” style death matches. Candie is a slave’s worst nightmare and the freed slave Django must cross him in order to reclaim his wife.

Will Smith was previously reported to be in talks to play Django, a slave who is liberated and taught the tricks of the trade by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz), however it doesn’t look like Smith will be appearing in the film at this point. Deadline says other names such as Idris Elba, Jamie Foxx and Chris Tucker are also being looked at. Tucker hasn’t appeared in a film since Rush Hour 3 in 2007, but he previously worked with Tarantino on Jackie Brown (1997), so he must still be on the director’s mind. Getting Leonardo DiCaprio would mean the actor playing Django wouldn’t need to be a big box office draw like Smith, so getting someone like Idris Elba would be a good move.

Filming is expected to begin later this year, so these talks may conclude shortly and we should get some official casting announcements.
