Roger Avary is one of those guys whose professional work I have separated from any rumors about him personally. I know that he won an Academy Award for writing Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino, but the relationship between the two has always been rocky.

Rules of Attraction, written and directed by Avary, was a bizarre look into the mind of American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis and featured what might be the best James Van Der Beek performance of all time. Avary also worked on Beowulf, though not as successfully, and Silent Hill, the adaptation directed by Christophe Gans. Silent Hill‘s story – or lack thereof – proved to be its undoing, but Avary was recently brought back on to write a sequel to the film, which performed well internationally.

Thing is, Roger Avary might have kind of…killed someone.

In January 2008, Avary was driving a car home from a restaurant with his wife and a man named Andreas Zini. Avary was intoxicated and slammed into a telephone pole at 100 MPH, killing Andreas Zini.

Now, he’s faced sentencing, and it doesn’t bode well for the future of Silent Hill 2:

Oscar-winning Pulp Fiction screenwriter Roger Avary has been sentenced to a year in jail after killing a friend in a drink driving crash in the US.

The 44-year-old writer pleaded guilty in August to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

He told the Californian court that the incident had “profoundly altered me to the very core of my being”.

Avary will face 5 years probation after he is released, no one has commented on the future of Silent Hill 2.
