While Monsters vs. Aliens didn’t exactly make Pixar numbers earlier this year, it did make just under $400 million worldwide which should be enough to earn it a sequel. DreamWorks, however, have decided not to go ahead with a Monsters vs. Aliens 2 as they think it underperformed overseas.

Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg continued that theme Tuesday, telling analysts in a conference call that “Monster vs. Aliens” was off to a “strong start in its initial home video release.” Katzenberg declined to give a forecast for DVD sales, saying it was too early to estimate future sales.

Katzenberg also disclosed that the studio did not plan to produce a sequel to “Monsters vs. Aliens,” which generated $380 million at the box office but did not fare well in some key international markets. Asked why, he said: “I’d like to tell you there’s a perfectly rational, clear and easy answer as to why not, but there isn’t.”

“There was enough of a consensus from our distribution and marketing folks in certain parts of the world that we would be pushing a boulder up a hill,” Katzenberg said of the decision not to pursue a sequel, which has been DreamWorks strategy with its other movies.

There are probably some folks out there who were hoping for a sequel, but when films such as Ice Age 2 and 3, Kung Fu Panda and the Pixar films are making over $400 million overseas (and even more when the US gross comes into play) you know this cute faced animation could have done better.

During the credits of the 81 Academy Awards we got a ton of footage from upcoming movies, including our first looking at many. The clips included Sherlock Holmes, Public Enemies, Up, Terminator Salvation, Inglourious Basterds, Monsters vs. Aliens, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Angels & Demons, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and G-Force (to name a few).

According to Variety UK cinema chain Cineworld have announced that by April, the company intend to have a total of 148 digital screens fitted and operational, providing one in five screens with digital capability. This improves the chances that UK citizens will be able to see Avatar, Monsters vs. Aliens and the other 11 3D films coming out this year as the film makers intended.

This comes after Europes leading cinema chain Odeon announced they plan on digitizing 111 of its 200 cinemas in Europe. Odeon claims the changes will leave 70% of its European consumer base within half an hour’s drive of a digital screen at one of its cinemas.

Over the next few years we will be having a surge in 3D moves. We have Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3, Monsters vs. Aliens and movies such as Iron Man 2 and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince are expected to have 3D in parts. So with all of this 3D goodness going around, you’d expect to see something a bit special with the marketing. A 3D poster perhaps?

The pieces are printed in the amazing form of RabbitHoles state-of-the-art digital motion holograms, which display 1280 frames of full-color, 3D imagery with up to ten seconds of fluid and seamless animation on a completely flat surface. At the moment these are being used for art, however I wouldn’t be too surprised if we start getting movie posters like this in the future.

According to Marketsaw Avatar director James Cameron has expressed interest in this company’s technology in the past, so we could very well be looking at what he will be using for the promotion of Avatar when the time comes.

The trailer for DreamWorks Monsters vs. Aliens has found it’s way online in bootleg form, so watch it while you can!

The film has a voice cast consisting of Seth Rogen, Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Rainn Wilson, Hugh Laurie and Kiefer Sutherland.

Monsters vs. Aliens was originally going to be released next May, however that would have caused a 3D clash with James Cameron’s Avatar, so it got moved to March 27th. A month or two later Avatar got pushed back to December, making the Monsters vs. Aliens shift unnecessary.
