There was speculation that Paramount hired Renner so he could take over from Tom Cruise in future films, but it’s unlikely he’ll be able to lead two spy franchises at once.

Renner recently worked on Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters with Gemma Arterton and will play Hawkeye in The Avengers when cameras roll next month.

Last year director Tony Gilroy (Duplicity, Michael Clayton, writer of previous Bourne films) explained what The Bourne Legacy was actually about and insisted it won’t prevent Matt Damon from returning in the future.

“It’s a completely original screenplay.” Secondly, “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project.

“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,” Gilroy says. “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy…the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].

Universal is targeting an August 2012 release for The Bourne Legacy with filming expected to begin in September. Josh Holloway, who played rouge con man Sawyer for all six seasons of the highly celebrated ABC television show, is in final negotiations to join Paramount’s upcoming installment of the Mission: Impossible series. More after the jump.

Holloway’s specific role in the film is being kept under wraps, but he’ll be another addition to the already-impressive Impossible Mission Force, the secret agency spearheaded by Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. Other members of the team include returning players Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg and newcomers Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, and Vladimir Mashkov. (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star Michael Nyqvist recently joined the cast as a villain.)

The Holloway connection is a natural one, since J.J. Abrams (who directed MI: 3) is executive producing the fourth film alongside Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner, and also exec produced “LOST.” Abrams directed the pilot episode of the series, which still holds the record as the most expensive television pilot ever filmed. Abrams also helped craft the story for the as-yet-untitled MI: 4, working with writers Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec.

The film will be directed by The Incredibles helmer Brad Bird, making his live-action directorial debut. I’m really getting excited about this project based on the casting; I’m certain Holloway’s smart-aleck remarks will balance out the comedic relief section of the film alongside Simon Pegg, and both actors are also capable of pulling off physical performances when necessary.

Paramount has set a December 16th, 2011 release date for the film, which will be filming all over the world very soon.

What do you think of Holloway joining the IMF team? Paula Patton will play an operative who works with them, as do Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg who are back in their roles.

Filming will take place in Vancouver, Prague, Dubai and the U.S. under the direction of Brad Bird (Ratatouille). Paramount has set a December 2011 release date, which means it is the first time a Mission Impossible film has been released outside of the summer movie season.

Read similar posts to Michael Nyqvist to play the villain in Mission Impossible 4 on Filmonic
