According to Heat Vision Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans, The Incredible Hulk) has signed on to direct “a sci-fi disaster pic with shades of The Day After Tomorrow and Taken” called G for Universal.

While the site says the plot is being kept under-wraps, we heard last year that the director was circling a movie which follow ”a father who has to search for his lost child as the world stops spinning and Earth begins to lose its gravity”, so the project is most likely that. Sounds interesting. I imagine there will be a lot of wire-work involved with people floating around everywhere.

The movie is still in the early stages and Universal are currently looking for screenwriters to get started on the script. The plan is for Leterrier to direct G after he completes Now You See Me, which has been described as “The Prestige meets The Town as a team of FBI agents hunts down a group of illusionists who perform miracle heists during their shows and shower the booty on their audiences.”

Over the past few months James Cameron has been looking at a number of potential candidates to direct a 3D remake of the 1966 sci-fi movie Fantastic Voyage. Talks with Bourne director Paul Greengrass didn’t work out, but now according to Deadline Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans, The Incredible Hulk) may be Cameron’s man.

Apparently “Cameron’s Avatar designers have done everything but build sets for the film that could be ready to shoot early in 2011″. 20th Century Fox just need a director and then to sort out the budget. The plot, while a bit strange, does seem quite interesting. The storyline centers on a dying scientist whose only chance for survival rests with five colleagues who are miniaturized and injected into his bloodstream.

While Leterrier’s Clash of the Titans took a bashing for the 3D conversion (a decision that rests with Warner Bros.), I enjoyed The Incredible Hulk and he has shown he is a capable action director with The Transporter movies. Leterrier just needs a good script which Shane Salerno (Armageddon) is said to have delivered. Laeta Kalogridis, who co-wrote Avatar with Cameron, recently came aboard for a re-write.

Clash of the Titans has claimed over $486 million worldwide following its release in March, and Warner Bros. has since announced a sequel is in the works with a 2012 release in mind. Louis Leterrier will not be returning as director (he will take on a producing role instead), which means Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are on the lookout for a new director.

Well according to The L.A Times The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning director Jonathan Liebesman may be the leading candidate:

A number of filmmakers are in contention for the job, but one name that’s risen to the top of the list is Jonathan Liebesman. Originally a horror director — he made “Darkness Falls” and the 2006 “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” prequel — Liebesman has re-fashioned himself as an action director. The filmmaker has a movie called “Battle: Los Angeles” — about an alien invasion in this fair city — coming next year. He’s also onboard for another classic action tale (or an action tale set in a classic period) at Warner Bros: a re-imagining of “Odysseus” with the producers of “300,” which Liebesman helped conceive and then sold to the studio.

A quick glance at Rotten Tomatoes shows that Liebesman films have been poorly received. Neither Darkness Falls or Massacre has a rating above 13%, which isn’t very encouraging. Battle: Los Angeles, which follows a Marine platoon facing off against an alien invasion in Los Angeles, sounds promising. Liebesman may turn out to be a better action director than a horror one.

Warner Bros. are likely to confirm a director soon as they are aiming to begin shooting (actually in 3D this time, not converting) in January. James Cameron may call Sam Worthington to his New Zealand lair for Avatar 2 next year so they have to move quickly while Worthington is free.

Earlier today we heard that 20th Century Fox had offered X-Men: First Class to Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn. Now Deadline are reporting that Vaughn may pass, and that Fox are currently in talks with a number of other directors and will make a decision next week.

Some of these names may ring a bell:

Fox continues its search, talking to a strong list of directors that includes Timur Bekmambetov, Louis Leterrier, David Slade, Daniel Espinoza and Carl Erick Rinsch. A decision will be made next week on the director with an eye toward a late summer or early fall start.

Bekmambetov is the director of Wanted, and he is probably looking for new projects seeing as though the sequel is in limbo. James McAvoy would actually make a good young Magneto.

Louis Leterrier recently directed Clash of the Titans (but won’t be returning for the sequel). The film did well at the box office but the reviews weren’t good, so I don’t particularly want him near the X-Men. David Slade is close to finishing work on The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and while the recent trailer looked okay I’d prefer Fox to get someone new that will bring the franchise back to X2 levels.

The two interesting names are those we aren’t too familiar with. Daniel Espinosa is a Swedish director whose latest film, Snabba Cash, is being remade by Warner Bros. with Zac Efron. HeatVision say he has been talking with Bryan Singer about directing First Class over recent weeks, however due to his film becoming the talk of the Berlin International Film Festival Universal, Benicio Del Toro and Leonardo DiCaprio are keen to get him to direct their movies. Carl Erick Rinsch is a commercial/music video director who recently directed a short film called The Gift, which we posted a few weeks ago. The short created a buzz among studios and they engaged in a bidding war to develop it into a feature film. I’ve embedded the short below:

After X3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine the X-Men franchise needs a talented upcoming director to make something more than just a popcorn flick. Out of the names mentioned above Carl Erick Rinsch gets my backing because he fits the criteria brilliantly, but I guess we’ll find out next week.

The Clash of the Titans franchise has officially been born. According to Deadline Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are moving ahead with a sequel to Clash of the Titans, and we could be seeing it as early as spring 2012. Sam Worthington and all the main survivors from the last outing will be back, and they are aiming to begin shoot before Worthington has to start work on Avatar 2 (whenever that will be).

One man who won’t be returning, however, is director Louis Leterrier.

But they will make the journey without Louis Leterrier, who will not return for an encore as director.

Greg Berlanti will write the story and the studio is already canvassing the agencies for a writer and director who can whip the movie into shape to shoot before Worthington makes Avatar 2. Leterrier will remain peripherally involved as executive producer. It isn’t unheard of for the original director of a big hit film to drop off the sequel–Doug Liman on The Bourne Identity comes to mind–and insiders swear that the Leterrier move was harmonious and are saying he wasn’t of a mind to rush into another installment of Greek mythological mayhem.

While the insiders say it was harmonious, I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted Leterrier to direct the sequel. When Leterrier pitched the idea of Clash of the Titans to them in 2008 he envisioned it as a new franchise, and during the promotional rounds he mentioned he already had ideas for the second film. His effort may have earned $388 million worldwide, but the reviews have been less than spectacular (30% on Rotten Tomatoes), and it may have been the negative response to the film which caused Warner Bros. to seek another director.

An exclusive from Latino Review, via one of their trusted sources, suggests that Louis Leterrier, director of 2008′s The Incredible Hulk, is circling the film adaptation of Y: The Last Man.

Y is one of a long list of comics / graphic novels that I really want to read but haven’t yet – the premise behind it is a very intriguing one. Written by Brian K. Vaughan (who has written 7 episodes of Lost, in addition to various other comics) and Pia Guerra, it takes place in a world where a “plague” has wiped out every mammal with a Y chromosome (i.e. men), save for the main character and his monkey. It sounds reminiscent of Children of Men or Stephen King’s The Stand - not in an entirely derivative sense, mind.

In 2007-2008, New Line purchased rights to the film – D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) was attached to the project, with Shia LaBeouf to potentially star as the last man himself. Latino Review’s source Pinche Taco states that this is no longer the case, and I can’t say I’m too upset about that.

Now Leterrier… Obviously Clash of the Titans hasn’t been released yet, and The Transporter films are a style-over-substance affair, but The Incredible Hulk was cool – was that actually down to Leterrier though? Pinche Taco says that “someone is trying to direct the movie which hopefully will give power to Team Brenner [president of production at New Line] to find a good director.” So the attention might bring in a better director? At least we know the project’s moving forward.

Taco also tells us that we shouldn’t count on Leterrier being the director of The Avengers, due to some sort of leadership feud over at Marvel / Disney. It’ll be interesting to see who eventually does direct the film in which the team of heroes comes together.

The focus on this one seems to be on how much of a cool action epic the film will be, with comments on the special effects, stunts and action from Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Sam Worthington and Gemma Arterton. We also see a few shots of filming, along with the usual footage we’ve seen from the trailers.

IGN has received a new international trailer for Clash of the Titans. We’ve seen a lot of the footage in previous trailers, however this trailer gives us a few new scenes and there’s a lot more talking. The prospect of seeing Liam Neeson as Zeus having a Godly rant in 3D should be enough to make everyone see this during its opening weekend.

The Incredible Hulk director Louis Letterier has spoken about The Avengers quite a lot in the past, with the topic mainly focusing on the involvement of The Hulk and the potential for the character to be the villain in the film.

Iron Man director Jon Favreau has ruled himself out as a candidate to direct, instead opting to produce, and this could leave the directors chair available for Letterier, who would be very willing to sit in it.

“I hope they don’t find a director before I’m available, because I’d love to take a crack at ['Avengers'],” Leterrier told MTV News. “It’s just an amazing universe, and to have everybody involved…”

“Jon Favreau would’ve been the best director to do this thing, but now that he’s a producing, I’d love to be able to work with him and continue what I started with ‘Hulk’ and what he started with ‘Iron Man’ and we do it together and continue that universe,” he said.

As for how likely that is to happen, Leterrier said he’s still contracted for a second film and has been chatting with Marvel whenever the opportunity arises. “It’s like an option,” he said of his Marvel movie deal. “I was optioned for two movies with Marvel. So every time I do a movie, like ‘Clash of the Titans’ for example, I say, ‘Guys, I’m about to do ‘Clash’ — so can I do it?’ And they say, ‘Yeah, we have nothing for you, so go ahead.’”

While Leterrier said he hasn’t sent anyone at Marvel a pitch for his “Avengers” vision at this point, the film isn’t far from his mind. “I love the Marvel universe,” he laughed. “I love those guys.”

I enjoyed The Incredible Hulk and Clash of the Titans looks great so I would be happy for Letterier to direct. I don’t want to speak too soon though as Thor director Kenneth Branagh and Captain America director Joe Johnston still have to show their stuff first. They could very well be better. I think it would be great if all 5 directors could serve as producers or work with whoever ends up directing. We’d have a dream team both in front and behind the camera.
