Last month we heard that Kate Beckinsale had been offered one of the lead roles in Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake, and now Collider has confirmed that Beckinsale has officially signed on, as has Jessica Biel (The A-Team) who will play the other lead female role, Melina.

The movie ditches the Martian storyline from the original 1990 movie and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai. Colin Farrell plays Douglas Quaid, a factory worker in New Shanghai who begins to believe he is a spy — although he doesn’t know for which side.

With filming set to begin on Monday in Toronto other cast members are being confirmed, and Heat Vision reports that Bill Nighy (Underworld, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1) will play Quatto, the leader of the resistance.

Total Recall is scheduled for released on August 3rd, 2012.

Now according to Deadline Wiseman has offered the role of Lori (played by Sharon Stone in the original film) to Kate Beckinsale, who also happens to be his wife.

Beckinsale is currently filming Underworld: New Dawn, but Wiseman wouldn’t have offered her the role if he knew she was busy, so she will probably be free to accept the offer.

The site also mentions Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are serious contenders for the other lead role, Melina, who will help Colin Farrell get to the bottom of the futuristic scandal on Mars.

While no official announcement has been made Colin Farrell is all but locked in to lead Len Wiseman’s Total Recall reboot, and Sony recently set the release date for August 3rd, 2012.

The next step is to find the leading lady, and now we can understand why Farrell signed up as Sony is currently looking for two of them. One for each planet.

First, there is the role of Lori, who started out the 1990 Paul Verhoeven-directed original as the happy homemaker wife of Douglas Quaid, only to transform into the bride from hell. That’s the role that really launched the star of Sharon Stone and I’m told that Kate Bosworth and Inglourious Basterds’ Diane Kruger are reading this week for that role.

There is also the role of Melina, which was originated by Rachel Ticotin, playing the woman who helps the protagonist get to the bottom of the futuristic scandal on Mars. I’m told that Eva Mendes and Paula Patton are reading for that role. Studio insiders warn me that list is not inclusive, and I’ve heard that Jessica Biel could be in contention for Melina, Eva Green too, and that Mendes is also being considered for the Lori role.

A mix of the usual names there. I don’t think there’s been a leading lady role over the past year without Biel’s name on it. If the decision came down to me i’d go for Diane Kruger as Lori, and either Paula Patton or Eva Green for Melina. I guess we’ll find out over the next week or so which actresses land the roles.

Two months ago Colin Farrell was reportedly offered the lead role in Columbia’s Total Recall reboot, which has Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman in the directors chair.

When recently asked about the project Farrell expressed his enthusiam for it, but jumped around the question of whether he was officially on-board.

From Collider:

Ferrell: There’s a good bit of action. I don’t know that it’s… it kind of sits on the fence in a really good way. It kind of sticks to one half or the other. It’s clever. It’s clever and it’s well written. And there’s loads of action. I saw some of pre-visualizations already, that have been done for the world that they’re going to create and it’s wicked man. It’s the first time in years where I went, ‘Wowww, I could be part of that? In that frame?’ It’s gone back to the original. Am I definitely doing that, are you going to ask? I dunno. I dunno.

So you’re on the fence?

Ferrell: I’d like to. I just don’t know. I’m not sure. I haven’t been home for Christmas. I haven’t made the required calls. I don’t know. I think, maybe.

I think we can assume he’s involved, but there may be a few more things to sign before it’s made official.

Swedish director duo Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein will be directing Kate Beckinsale in Underworld 4 according to Heat Vision. They previously directed Shelter, a supernatural thriller starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers which has yet to be released in the US.

Filming is set to begin in March 2011 in Vancouver. John Hlavin (The Shield) wrote the script, which underwent revisions by J. Michael Straczynski (The Changeling). Len Wiseman, who directed the first two movies in the franchise, will be producing.

No story details have been revealed at the moment, although as casting gets underway more on the movie will be revealed. Screen Gems has set a January 20, 2012 release date.

Back in July Columbia Pictures began efforts to remake Total Recall, the 1990 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone, by hiring Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman to direct. They also hired Kurt Wimmer (Salt) to write the screenplay, which appears to be developed enough for the studio to start offering the lead role to actors.

Total Recall is narrowing in on finding the star that will step into the shoes first worn by Arnold Schwarzennegar in the 1990 movie.

Colin Farrell is at the top of the list, which also includes Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender.

No offers have been made for anyone to star in the movie, which is looking at a late March start with Len Wiseman behind the camera and Neal Moritz and his Original Film banner producing.

The three actors all have projects potentially lined up which could make them unavailable. Hardy will be re-teaming with Inception director Christopher Nolan for Batman 3 next summer, and Fassbender is thought to be wanted for a role in The Hobbit. Colin Farrell seems to be the only one with no big time-consuming movies lined up, although he is set to shoot By Virtue Fall with Eric Bana early next year.

With Screen Gems already setting a January 20th, 2012 release date for Underworld 4 last month it was only a matter of time before we got some casting confirmations. The first (and expected) news is that Kate Beckinsale will return as Selene.

According to Deadline filming will begin in March in Vancouver, although no director is attached at the moment. That will no doubt change over the upcoming weeks as talks will already be in place. Patrick Tatopoulos directed Underworld: Rise of the Lycans last year and doesn’t seem to have much going on so he could return. Len Wiseman will be producing, but he could direct as he did with the first two films in the franchise.

Screen Gems has moved back the release date for Underworld 4 from September 23, 2011 to January 20, 2012. Last month Len Wiseman said the fourth film in the franchise is “being written and talked about and hopefully all comes together”. With this new release date set it looks like it will.

When asked if Kate Beckinsale would be back as Selena Wiseman replied, “Yes. That’s the plan. We’re both waiting to see what kind of story comes together. It’s just getting the script to a certain place where we’re both happy with it.”

Wiseman didn’t say whether he would be directing this time or just producing again, but one thing we do know is that it will be shot in 3D.
