Now Feige says he wants to see a Hawkeye movie, persumably with Jeremy Renner (although you know what Marvel are like with re-casting) and a S.H.I.E.L.D spin-off.

“We hope that holds true for the characters appearing in that film — Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the spy organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. — all of whom are more than worthy and capable of carrying their own films. And, we’ve got a lot of other characters we’re prepping and getting ready for film debuts: the world of martial arts, these great cosmic space fantasies, Dr. Strange, and the magic side of the Marvel Universe. There are many, many stories to be mined.”

Over the past year writers have been hired for Black Panther, Iron Fist and Dr. Strange movies, so it’ll just be a case of waiting to see if any of them leave development hell. Marvel were on the verge of shooting Runaways with director Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), but they put the project on hold because they were already too busy with the current line-up. Marvel managed to turn a second-tier comic book character such as Iron Man into a box office giant, but third and fourth-tier characters may not achieve the same success.

Read similar posts to Kevin Feige wants Black Widow, Hawkeye and S.H.I.E.L.D spin-offs on Filmonic

Jon Favreau left Iron Man 3 for Magic Kingdom

Movie News

Iron Man 3

Jon Favreau

Kevin Feige

Magic Kingdom

Marvel

Following news earlier today that Iron Man director Jon Favreau would not be returning to direct the third film, currently set for 2013, the director spoke with Hero Complex about his decision. Favreau says he remains close to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, but wanted to make Magic Kingdom for Disney to “blow people away, which is easier to do with a project that isn’t loaded with built-in expectations.”

Favreau also confirmed he will remain a producer on The Avengers and looks forward to seeing what Marvel does with it’s upcoming slate:

“Marvel and I both came of age together,” Favreau said. “The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in…. ‘Iron Man’ has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the ‘Iron Man’ films. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world.”

So what exactly is this Magic Kingdom movie Favreau is so keen to make? The director revealed a few details earlier this year:

“[The story for Magic Kingdom] is essentially a family caught in Disneyland, bringing all of the attractions to life. I really want to plumb the depths of the history of the park because it’s a place I love to go a few times a year.”

I don’t think it will be like Night of the Museum. I want to make it a little bit spookier like the old Disney movies were and try to really capture that tone.

This is something that I’ve always been drawn to and now to say ‘What characters do you want to use and how do you not make it Space Jam or like the Christmas parade with every character?’ How do you show restraint and how do you make it tie into the emotional development of the characters?”

Personally it’d rather he direct Iron Man 3, but Favreau showed with Elf and Zathura: A Space Adventure that he can make fun family movies, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does with Mickey, Goofy and co.

Favreau is currently in post-production on Cowboys and Aliens which will be released next July.

Read similar posts to Jon Favreau left Iron Man 3 for Magic Kingdom on Filmonic

Kevin Fiege talks Iron Man 2 and Black Widow solo movie

Movie News

Black Widow

Iron Man 2

Kevin Feige

Yesterday Filmonic was invited to a virtual roundtable with Iron Man 2 producer Kevin Fiege. During the session the producer was asking a number of questions by various people about the Iron Man 2 DVD and Blu-ray which will be released September 28th, but he also spoke briefly about Captain America, Thor, and mentioned a Black Widow solo movie with Scarlett Johansson was in the very early stages.

You can read the whole interview below: (the more interesting questions and answers are in bold)

Q - As you were filming Iron Man 2, did you think about certain extras you wanted to see on the Blu-ray?
A – Kevin Feige: The S.H.I.E.L.D. Data Vault goes back to a discussion we had during Iron Man 1 and was something we knew we wanted to include on Iron Man 2. The documentary was something else we planned from the beginning. As you can tell, Jon was very open to having cameras on set and sharing the process with the fans. We had the great Sean Ricigliano following him with a camera at every turn.

Q – Is the S.H.I.E.L.D. Vault intended to be an evolving feature on Iron Man 2 via BD-Live or will more robust versions of the Vault appear on Thor and Captain America next fall?
A – Kevin Feige: One of the great things about Blu-ray technology is the ability to expand and update the content via BD-Live and that’s certainly part of our discussion. We’ve had fun discussions about how to expand this experience on future releases, but clearly we need to wait and see how it is received on this release.

Q – What limits have you stretched of what the Iron Man 2 Blu-ray experience of the film can be?
A – Kevin Feige: With more disc space we were able to offer the long form documentary, and superb video and audio quality, as well as the multiple viewing modes, allowing viewers the choice of how deeply they want to delve into the extra content.

Q – Will there be upcoming BD-Live rewards such as Thor and Captain America footage for Iron Man 2 Blu-ray owners?
A – Kevin Feige: For the first time it’s exciting that BD-Live can be part of the discussions for marketing our upcoming movies.

Q – You have some awesome movies under your belt, how will you keep Marvel stories fresh and alive?
A – Kevin Feige: We have the incredibly unfair advantage of almost 70 years of material, all of which has been revamped and refreshed over the decades in comic book form. Our job is to look at the rich history of these characters and pick the best stories to tell.

Q – More an observation than a question. I watched the IM2 Blu-ray bonus features last night and applaud the Ultimate Iron Man documentary that does not require flipping through 10 different 2-minute featurettes to get a flavor for the making-of. Hope to see a similar approach taken on future Marvel Studios live-action film home video releases…
A – Kevin Feige: That’s something we focused on a lot and something that Jon and I thought was very important. In many respects we’re fans first and tried to put on the disc the kinds of things we would want to see.

Q – Can you talk about the balance between real effects and CGI … how critical is that to the success of a superhero film?
A – Kevin Feige: The combination of practical and visual effects is very important. Jon is very sensitive to shots in which the camera work is done at impossible speeds and impossible angles. Our CGI vendors became very astute at what we call ‘favreauvean’ shots which contain those imperfections that make even a full CGI shot seem practical.

Q – What’s it like to orchestrate such a large group of talent and personalities?
A – Kevin Feige: While it can be challenging at times, it is ultimately extremely rewarding and the only way I like to work. The more talented people you’re surrounded by, the better the product turns out.

Q – What is your favorite Iron Man suit and what did you want to see with the suit for Iron Man 2?
A – Kevin Feige: The suitcase suit is the thing we are most proud of and was the very first new suit we discussed… because it was right out of the books and because at the time we had no idea how we were going to pull it off. It’s a testament to the great work of designer Ryan Meinerding and the designers at D-neg that it became this film’s showcase suit and is on the cover of the Blu-ray.

Q – Jon Favreau mentioned that Mickey Rourke spent time in a Russian prison to research his role. What did you think when you heard that?
A – Kevin Feige: I was glad he didn’t ask us about it, because I’m not sure we would have let him, but he did pick up some great ideas about his character, particularly his tattoos and his wardrobe.

Q – What was the decision process that made you decide against that alternate opening?
A – Kevin Feige: That’s a good question. We debated back and forth for a very long time. While we liked the notion of starting off with our hero in an unexpected manner, ultimately Jon felt it was best to see Tony first revealed on the Stark Expo stage.

Q – What were some of the avenues and challenges the final moment of the first film set up that were different from what we’ve seen in other super hero films?
A – Kevin Feige: The ‘I am Iron Man’ moment at the end of Iron Man 1 was intended to be the perfect finale to that story, whether there was a sequel or not. We knew we were locking ourselves into avoiding any secret identity plots in subsequent movies, which we were okay with because the secret identity trope was never part of what made Iron Man interesting.

Q – Have you guys been influenced by the look and feel of mobile devices interfaces such as the iPhone or Palm’s webOS when designing Tony’s gadgets and tech interface, as well as the extras on the discs?
A – Kevin Feige: All of us involved in the Iron Man franchise are early adopters when it comes to those kinds of gadgets. After Iron Man 1, I think the influence went both ways, which we see as a high compliment.

Q – Can you talk a bit about the Easter Eggs on the IRON MAN 2 release, specifically the connections to other Marvel Studios characters?
A – Kevin Feige: The fun thing about Easter Eggs is letting people discover them themselves, and while many have been discussed already, there are others still waiting to be found and many that may not become clear until you see our future releases.

Q – How important do you think a character having a flaw is? How big should that flaw be?
A – Kevin Feige: When it comes to larger than life characters like our Marvel super heroes, a flaw is what makes them human and is their most important aspect. We can push that flaw as far as we can, just short of puking into a toilet.

Q – How hands on are you with the Marvel films when they are in production? For example, are you active on the Captain America set right now and taking a little “break” for this roundtable? Or do you more watch and provide feedback from afar?
A – Kevin Feige: I’m as active as my schedule allows. I just returned from being in the UK for three and a half months on Cap, and have returned to Los Angeles for Thor editorial and of course for this virtual round table.

Q – Sam Rockwell is an uncommon talent. Any anecdotes to share about his work process or elements he brought to the film?
A – Kevin Feige: To quote Senator Stern, Sam Rockwell is a national treasure. Every choice and decision he makes adds to the character and makes the movie better. For example, check out his orange hands in the hanger scene – that was his choice. People kept trying to color correct it, and Jon constantly had to protect Sam’s choice.

Q – Much of the history of Iron Man comics was combed for these films, how much has Matt Fraction’s Invincible Iron Man series been considered for material since it is the most contemporary story yet?
A – Kevin Feige: We’re huge fans of the Fraction run. It was a big part of our discussions for part 2, and continues to be part of our conversations of how the character will be moving forward.

Q – Why did you decide to drop the scene where Natasha shoots Iron Man’s cast?
A – Kevin Feige: We were always big fans of that scene and it played a big part in the trailers, but ultimately we decided it went against her character to seemingly push Tony to be so irresponsible with his tech.

Q – When it comes to extras, how much are you motivated by looking at what you’ve done before, what other discs have done and trying to top them?
A – Kevin Feige: It’s been two years since we released a Blu-ray and we spent a lot of time looking at what other discs have done successfully, particularly Paramount’s releases of the great Star Trek and Transformers 2 Blu-rays.

Q – How do you decide on which deleted scenes to include in the DVD?
A – Kevin Feige: We included the ones that we always liked but that didn’t work within the movie.

Q – Has there been any more talk of a Black Widow solo movie?
A – Kevin Feige: We’ve already started discussions with Scarlett about the idea of a solo movie and have begun putting together concepts, but The Avengers comes first.

Q – What led to the casting of Garry Shandling?
A – Kevin Feige: Co-producer of Captain America Stephen Broussard saw him on an episode of Tavis Smiley, and told his idea to Jeremy Latcham the co-producer of Iron Man 2, who brought it up to Jon Favreau, who called Garry literally on the spot.

Q – Comic-con proved very fruitful for the Iron Man and other Marvel franchises. Can you offer a flavor of what to expect from Marvel at the next Comic-Con San Diego?
A – Kevin Feige: We were very pleased and proud of the booth and panel we had at this year’s Con. It’s too early to start thinking about it, but we are trying to figure out if we can get the Aircraft Carrier stationed down there to hover above the convention center.

Q – Tony Stark’s pet peeve of “handing him things” is brought up a lot more in the second Iron Man film, is there a reason for that?
A – Kevin Feige: In keeping with the Tony Stark parallels to Howard Hughes and his eccentricities, it felt like a fun touch.

Q – Which extra features do you think will provide the most surprises for hardcore Iron Man fans?
A – Kevin Feige: The documentary and the S.H.I.E.L.D. viewer are filled with great content. And stay vigilant, there is stuff buried even deeper for more hardcore fans.

Q – Kevin, could you discuss the involvement of Kyle Cooper and Prologue for the credit sequences and virtual interface for Tony Stark? Did that evolve out of new concept, from the 90′s Iron Man Comics or from Star Trek?
A – Kevin Feige: We’ve had a long relationship with Kyle and Prologue as they’ve done great title work for us over the years. As they moved into VFX, we were proud to be a part of that. The holographic floor in Iron Man 2 is an expansion of the table top tech we established in Iron Man 1.

Q – Do you feel a strong need to stay current with new technology in BD or 3D?
A – Kevin Feige: We need to keep on top of advancements in every technical arena in order to provide the best movie watching experiences.

Q – One of the cool things about building a library of Marvel Universe films is that it seems like a double or triple feature (or more). Are there any features that streamline that experience, or suggest in what order to watch the films?
A – Kevin Feige: We produced the movies to be watched in the order they were released, but as it has already been pointed out in screen grabs online, there are clues in Iron Man 2 that point to where The Incredible Hulk falls in the Marvel cinematic chronology.

Q – What were some of the biggest production challenges that you faced while filming Iron Man 2?
A – Kevin Feige: The Monaco sequence was one that provided the most concern for us in preproduction. The limitations of taking a full crew overseas and getting access to the track initially made it seem undoable. He was saying Norton isn’t a team player, basically.

Well Norton’s agent, Brian Swardstrom, wasn’t too happy about Feige’s statement so he delivered a Hulk smash of his own in response.

From HitFix:

“This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light. Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast. Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith. This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.

We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige’s mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige’s statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel’s fans.

So it appears Edward Norton was in talks to return but Marvel didn’t want to meet Norton’s financial requests. I suppose both sides are to blame but if I were Marvel I would have just sweetened the deal slightly so that Norton was happy and then get on with making the movie.

Maybe Marvel would have been a bit more generous if The Incredible Hulk made more of an impact at the box office. At the moment Iron Man/Downey Jr. are the stars of the show and, while I would prefer Norton to return, The Avengers can still make $500 million+ without Norton. And that is how studios will look at it ultimately.

Expect the new Bruce Banner to be revealed at Comic Con in just over 2 weeks time.

Read similar posts to Team Edward responds to Marvel’s decision to re-cast The Hulk on Filmonic

Kevin Feige confirms Hulk re-casting

Movie News

Edward Norton

Kevin Feige

The Avengers

The Incredible Hulk

Yesterday news broke at HitFix that Marvel intends to re-cast the role of Bruce Banner for The Avengers, replacing Edward Norton who we saw in The Incredible Hulk in 2008. Fans have been generally against the idea as it will mean the character will be played by three different actors in three different movies, which obviously isn’t good for continuity.

Now Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige has released a statement on the matter, and from the sounds of it Norton’s lack of team spirit may have been a factor in the re-casting decision.

From HitFix:

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

With Comic Con 2010 taking place between July 22-25th we may get an announcement then as there will be panels for both Thor and Captain America.

I would much prefer Ed Norton to return, but if they hire a talented actor it may defuse some of the negativity from fans. He responded with:

“Definitely possible,” said Feige. “Yes, absolutely.”

Obviously this is nothing more than talk at the moment, and if a Black Widow movie were to happen people would need to respond well to the character in Iron Man 2 first.

There is also the issue of whether Scarlet Johansson can carry a movie by herself, which she hasn’t up until now, and let’s not forgot that no movie studio has put a female superhero movie into production in years. Lionsgate actually started developing a Black Widow movie back in 2004 with X-Men and Watchmen writer David Hayter on script and directing duties. As you can probably work out, the movie never happened, and Hayter revealed the reasons why earlier this year.

Essentially, the story is a young Russian girl’s parents are killed, so she’s given to the KGB to be developed into a super spy. In her early teen years, the Soviet Union crumbles, so they decide to kill her. But at that point, she’s too tough to kill, so she escapes and makes her way to America. Then, years later, we catch up with her in present day. She’s a freelance mercenary, and she’s called back to where she was brought up to face her past. What I tried to do was use the backdrop of the splintered Soviet Empire – a lawless insane asylum with four hundred some odd nuclear missile silos. It was all about loose nukes, and I felt it was very timely and very cool.

Unfortunately, as I was coming up on the final draft, a number of female vigilante movies came out. We had Tomb Raider and Kill Bill, which were the ones that worked, but then we had BloodRayne and Ultraviolet and Aeon Flux. Aeon Flux didn’t open well, and three days after it opened, the studio said, “We don’t think it’s time to do this movie.” I accepted their logic in terms of the saturation of the marketplace, but it was pretty painful. I had not only invested a lot of time in that movie, but I had also named my daughter, who was born in that time period Natasha – after the lead character in Black Widow. I named my daughter after a movie that I wasn’t working on anymore.

I suppose we can blame Aeon Flux and all the rest for killing off female superhero movies. Most of them were bad because they had the wrong creative team involved. Catwoman had more than 14 writers over the course of the scripting process which should have been a warning signal to Warner Bros. but they made the film regardless. If studios get talent people behind the camera then we could be seeing characters such as Wonder Woman and Black Widow sharing the big screen with Batman, Spider-Man and the rest of them.

Read similar posts to A Black Widow movie is “definitely possible” on Filmonic

The Hulk will be in The Avengers

Movie News

Kevin Feige

The Avengers

The Hulk

The Incredible Hulk 2

Thor

As Iron Man, Thor and Captain America all have movies in either pre or post-production we always knew all three would eventually be appearing in The Avengers along with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. However up until now we haven’t heard whether our green friend with anger issues would also be making an appearance. In the past producer Kevin Feige couldn’t answer the question of whether The Hulk would be in The Avengers, although he did say “there will be some members of the Hulk universe in the film”. Now in an interview with SFX Magazine (via SHH) he confirmed The Hulks involvement while discussing future Marvel films:

“My only concern is that when we launch a franchise–whichever character’s franchise that may be–it should stand on its own two feet… So by the time ‘The Avengers’ comes in 2012, it’s not just a team superhero movie with a bunch of characters with powers. It’s three people – four including the Hulk; five including Nick Fury – who you’ve seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time.”

Catch that Hulk bit? Feige also said that he won’t rule out the possibility of a second Incredible Hulk film with Edward Norton. “That would be post-’Avengers,’ if it happened… I think there’s a chance. It’s certainly our intention to use the same actors from film to film where we can.”

Feige was asked it will be difficult to meld the fantasy of Thor with the high-tech science fiction in Iron Man and The Avengers. “No,” he said, “because we’re doing the Jack Kirby/Stan Lee/Walt Simonson/J. Michael Straczynski ‘Thor.’ We’re not doing the blow-the-dust-off-of-the-old-Norse-book-in-your-library ‘Thor.’ And in the ‘Thor’ of the Marvel Universe, there’s a race called the Asgardians. And we’re linked through this Tree of Life that we’re unaware of. It’s real science, but we don’t know about it yet. The ‘Thor’ movie is about teaching people that.”

Edward Norton said last year that having The Hulk as the villain in The Avengers “would be a fun way to go” and I agree, however I think there should be an even bigger villain that the team have to battle with, and they can only do that by getting the Hulk on their side. Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand) is currently working on the script (lucky guy) and The Avengers will probably begin filming this time next year for it’s May 2012 release.

Read similar posts to The Hulk will be in The Avengers on Filmonic

The Avengers line-up revealed

Movie News

Captain America: The First Avenger

Iron Man 2

Kevin Feige

The Avengers

Thor

Some Iron Man 2 footage was shown at Comic-Con yesterday (read a description of what was seen here) and afterwards producer Kevin Feige took part in a Q&A session. As Marvel have IM2, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers coming up there are hundreds of questions people would like to ask, however one person asked a question everyone wants to know: Which heroes will be in The Avengers line-up?

I think we know. I think it’s going to be Iron Man and Thor, Captain America and Nick Fury. I think it’s safe to assume that there will be some members of the Hulk universe in the film as well. In terms of the additional I think Black Widow, sure. The SHIELD organization for sure. What’s exciting, for me, about The Avengers movie is seeing those four characters interact with each other. I think anywhere from the first issues of The Avengers to Civil War the dynamic between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark is just awesome, it’s fascinating. It brings out sides in others that won’t be brought out in the other franchises. Going forward with the mix is a whole other thing, I think it will be cool. So to pile on another 15 or 10, frankly more than four would be too many.

Is the Hulk in it?

Zak Penn is outlining it as we speak, so we’ll see.

In the past there has been talk of The Hulk actually being a villain in the film, which I think would be kinda cool.

What do you think of the line-up? Are there any other characters you think should appear in the film?

Read similar posts to The Avengers line-up revealed on Filmonic
