This will require some underwater performance-capture, which has never been done before. Cameron is also planning to shoot at 60 frames per second which, again, has never been done before on a feature film.

The sequels will be shot back-to-back so whenever the second film hits, the third won’t be far off.

Read similar posts to We may have a 4 year wait until Avatar 2 at Filmonic

Paul Greengrass won’t be going on a Fantastic Voyage

Movie News

Fantastic Voyage

James Cameron

Jon Landau

Paul Greengrass

Treasure Island

According to Deadline Bourne director Paul Greengrass will not be directing a 3D remake of the 1966 sci-fi movie Fantastic Voyage. The film will be produced by Avatar director James Cameron and his production company Lightstorm Entertainment, along with producer Jon Landau.

The plot, while a bit strange, does seem quite interesting. The storyline centers on a dying scientist whose only chance for survival rests with five colleagues who are miniaturized and injected into his bloodstream. While promoting Avatar on DVD/Blu-ray Landau spoke more about the film, and Greengrass’ involvement.

From Sci-Fi Wire:

“We had a very good conversation with Paul yesterday,” Landau said, “We’re still progressing along that.”

“I think for certain scenes [he will use handheld cameras],” Landau said. “What Paul likes about the movie is that it gives him an opportunity to do something that he hasn’t really done that much of, designing this world and playing to that. You take Titanic and say, ‘Does it give Jim Cameron an opportunity to bring his action sensibility to a period drama?’ And it did. So I think Paul bringing that style but adapting it, Paul’s a smart, smart guy. He’ll do a great job on that movie.”

Nothing is final yet for Fantastic Voyage while Greengrass, Cameron and Landau are feeling each other out. “When you hire a director on a movie, it’s like a marriage,” Landau said. “I think Paul and we want to date a little bit before we put on the ring.”

The adventure-fantasy will be something new for Greengrass, who is known for his serious and gritty films such as United 93 and the Bourne films. Once the trio have finished bonding (not Na’vi style I hope) we should get more news on this as it moves forward. I’m always up for new and different sci-fi films (even if it is a remake).

Read similar posts to Jon Landau talks Paul Greengrass and Fantastic Voyage at Filmonic

James Cameron met with Spider-Man reboot director Marc Webb

Movie News

3D

James Cameron

Jon Landau

Marc Webb

The Amazing Spider-Man

Back in 1991 James Cameron was interested in directing a big screen adaptation of Spider-Man, and his script can still be read on the internet today. After the announcement that Sony would be rebooting Spidey Cameron said that he wasn’t interested in the opportunity to direct the webslinger again, calling it “sloppy seconds”, however it appears he is still interested in the reboot to some extent, having recently met with director Marc Webb.

From MTV:

“Last [week] we met the director of [the next 'Spider-Man' film],” Landau said. “[Webb] wants to do the next one in 3D, which they’ve announced that they want to do. So, we want to try to support that as much as possible.”

“Jim loved ‘(500) Days of Summer,’” Landau continued. “It’s not something that you would think is necessarily in his wheelhouse, but he really enjoyed that.”

Producer Jon Landau also spoke about other movies that recently caught the 3D bug following Avatar‘s success:

“Other movies are turning to it now, some of which I agree with, some of which I don’t agree with. ‘Clash of The Titans’ is coming out in 3-D; they’re converting it very hastily into 3-D. I’m not in favor of that,” Landau explained, saying he and Cameron much prefer what “Spider-Man” is doing. “If you want to shoot a 3-D movie, shoot it in 3-D.”

Marc Webb hasn’t made a film in 3D before, so it looks like Sony brought in the 3D master to send him in the right direction. Production on the reboot will begin later this year, so expect to hear casting news over the upcoming months.

Read similar posts to James Cameron met with Spider-Man reboot director Marc Webb at Filmonic

Avatar producer hints at sequel direction

Movie News

Avatar

Avatar 2

Jon Landau

We haven’t heard or seen much from Avatar since Avatar Day back in August when select members of the public were treated to 15 minutes of footage, and we got our first glimpse at a trailer. However, there’s less than 3 months left to go before Avatar hits our screens so 20th Century Fox will probably be gearing up the marketing blitz. If all the hype and marketing pays off Avatar could be a big earner for Fox, and they will no doubt want a sequel. James Cameron seems keen on an Avatar 2, and now producer Jon Landau has dropped a small hint at what we could see:

From /Film:

If the public likes Avatar, it’s a possibility. After all, here we are exploring the surface of the planet Pandora. The interior remains to be seen.

So Avatar 2 could see Cameron taking us into the depths of Pandora? Nice. I hope the team have learned how to speed up the film making process, because if Avatar ends up as good as one hopes I don’t want to have to wait another 4 years for the sequel.

Read similar posts to Avatar producer hints at sequel direction at Filmonic
