We may be getting an Iron Man 2 trailer with Sherlock Holmes

Iron Man 2 finished filming and entered post-production way back in July, so it was expected Marvel would give us a trailer sometime in the near future. Well earlier today director Jon Favreau retweeted a message from someone on Twitter, and it hinted that we could see the first trailer with Sherlock Holmes:

This makes sense. Sherlock Holmes stars Robert Downey Jr. after all. Expect the first Iron Man 2 trailer online around December 25th.

Jon Favreau won’t be directing The Avengers

A year ago it was announced that Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau would be an executive producer on The Avengers, and there was talk that Marvel wanted him in the director chair too. However, Favreau recently sat down with MTV and denied that he would be directing, and explained why not.

“They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available,” he explained. “It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say.”
“It’s going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with ‘Avengers’ you’re going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor,” he continued. “How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it’s going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we’ve created.”
Favreau also confessed that his focus on a single member of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” might not be the best fit for the team-up film.
“That’s why it’s good that you have the guys from Marvel like Kevin Feige, who knows the books well and has been involved with the making of all the movies, and he’ll be very involved with ‘Thor’ and ‘Cap,’” said Favreau. “You need somebody who has the perspective of all the different franchises to bring them together. I have the myopic vision of just knowing and loving Iron Man.”

So if not Favreau then who? As the film won’t be released until 2012 there’s plenty of time for Marvel to find the right guy (or female?) for the job. Although there is a chance it could either be Thor director Kenneth Branagh or Captain America director Joe Johnston.

Last week Entertainment Tonight posted a 5 minutes video from the set of Iron Man 2. It contained interviews from all the cast and a look at some behind the scenes action from the Monaco Grand Prix set. Now they another video to present to the world which focuses on Mickey Rourke and his whips. While the video is shorter, it’s for more interesting than listen to Gwyneth Paltrow talking about how good she feels and her children. I’m sure her children are lovely, but this is Iron Man 2 and i’m sure everyone would rather see Mickey Rourke smashing up cars!

Full ET Iron Man 2 set visit

Yesterday we got a sneak preview and today we have the full Entertainment Tonight Iron Man 2 set visit. Most of the visit takes place on the Monaco Grand Prix set where Tony Stark first meets Whiplash. We see some cars being smashed up and Robert Downey Jr. says that it is probably his “favorite thing in the world to do professionally because you get the free adrenaline rush and it’s all safe.” Gwyneth Paltrow talks about wearing skimpy clothes and Scarlett Johansson talks about training for the role of Black Widow and the love triangle between her character, Tony Stark and Pepper Potts.

First look at Don Cheadle and Sam Rockwell in Iron Man 2

Entertainment Weekly have been on an Iron Man 2 roll recently. They got our first look at Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and now they’ve received the far less interesting images of Don Cheadle as Col. James Rhodes and Sam Rockwell as weapons manufacturer Justin Hammer. The image above also shows director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr watching playback from a boxing ring.

Filming on Iron Man 2 finished this week, so hopefully they can gather some footage together for a teaser trailer in the near future.

Mickey Rourke will talk to a cockatoo in Iron Man 2

Earlier today we got our first look at Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, however the accompanying article also gives us a few details about what we can expect in the sequel. Here are some snippets below:

Rourke, for his part, wanted to instill some lightness into the role of the heavy. “I told Favreau, ‘I don’t want to just play him as a one-dimensional p—-,’” he says. “He let me have a cockatoo, who I talk to and get drunk with while I’m making my suit.”

Scarlett Johansson joined the cast as Stark’s mysterious new assistant, Natasha, who has an alter ego of her own, Black Widow. That introduction inevitably sparks romantic tension between Stark and former assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), who’s been promoted to CEO of Stark Industries. “The men want it to be, like, ‘Ooh, the girls are fighting over Tony,’ but it’s not as standard as that,” says Paltrow. “There’s a weird male catfight fantasy. Downey agrees. He believes what differentiates the franchise from other superhero series can be summarized as follows: “We’re horny. Not, like, can’t-bring-your-kids horny, but just…horny.”

Mickey Rourke getting drunk whilst talking to a cockatoo and lots of horny people. Iron Man 2 sounds like it’s going to be fun.

Above is our first look at Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in Iron Man 2. USA Today got some quotes from director Jon Favreau and Rourke himself who explained what we will be seeing from the technologically advanced bondage suit:

“The technologies are definitely related,” says director Jon Favreau. “That’s part of the core theme of the film.”
The villain’s alter ego, Ivan Vanko, is a Russian who “has constructed his own version of a suit,” Favreau says. Among the creative innovations: a pair of whips, powered by the suit’s glowing chest piece, that are expected to keep Iron Man cracking.
Whiplash “is going to light them up,” Rourke quips
“We like to play into and against the expectations that people might have, so we mixed it up a bit,” Favreau says.
“It was very important that the villain be as compelling as can be. … Once I thought of Mickey in that role, it made me understand how to shape the story.”

Empire visited the set of Iron Man 2 recently and while they won’t be releasing any details until their July issue, they have published some quotes from Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau and Mickey Rourke. Favreau talks about the pressure Tony Stark will be under in the sequel, and he gives hints about what Jim Rhodes (Don Cheadle) will be getting up to, or should I say into. Rourke says that he’s having the time of his life, however his Whiplash suit has “been really brutal”.

“Tony’s expected to be a role model and I don’t think he’s ready to be one. He’s under a great deal of pressure and when you’re under pressure, I think you find outlets for that. That’s one of the tensions of the film: it’s one thing to say you’re Iron Man, and another thing to actually become Iron Man.”
And what of Stark’s friend and confidant Jim Rhodes? Favreau hinted that Rhodes, now played by Don Cheadle, will be tooling up big-time when he dons his own armoured suit as War Machine. “Rhodesy is definitely stepping up in this film. Let me put it this way: Tony’s not the only person with technology in the film.”
Meanwhile, Mickey Rourke, who appears as new Iron Man nemesis Whiplash, was back on set last week after a stint with Sly, Li, Lundgren, Statham et al on The Expendables. “I’m having the time of my life!” he enthused about joining the Iron Man franchise. “It’s been really brutal, because my Iron Man suit weighs 23lb. It’s sort of a half-suit, with half my skin showing, with lots of Russian tattoos, because [Whiplash is just] out of a Russian-zone prison.”

Iron Man 2 is at the half way point in terms of filming so hopefully we will be getting some stuff over the upcoming months.

First look at Tony Stark in Iron Man 2

USA Today were given the first image from Iron Man 2 which you can see below:

The sequel to last summer’s blockbuster, which began shooting three weeks ago and opens May 7, 2010, takes place six months after Stark revealed his identity as Iron Man, says director Jon Favreau. And the development is playing out with unexpected results. “How many superheroes are open about their true identities?” he asks. “We wanted to play with that idea. But it obviously has consequences — in his relationships, on the team. There are a lot of areas we can explore.”
Favreau says that tackling the franchise a second time is easier because he knows the landscape. Something else would help, too: “I really enjoyed when we were a dark horse and no one knew much about us. … I hope we can find that place again.”

Iron Man 2 set video + love triangle confirmed

Filming for Iron Man 2 began yesterday, which is probably the most exciting news we’ll get all week, and luckily for us some paparazzi type people were close to the set and managed to record the cast and crew getting ready for filming. We see director Jon Favreau walking, Gwyneth Paltrow sitting in a car, and then we see Robert Downey Jr. both walking and sitting in a car. Watch below!

In other Iron Man 2 news Robert Downey Jr. confirmed (kinda) to MTV that Tony Stark will be involved in a love triangle with Pepper Potts (Paltrow) and the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

When asked whether he’d be 1/3 of a love triangle in the film, Downey told MTV News, “Heck yeah, Wouldn’t you?”
Still unconfirmed is exactly which iteration of the Black Widow will be making her appearance in the film. The original version was a Russian spy who, after defecting, ended up joining the Avengers. In Marvel’s Ultimate universe, however, the Black Widow nearly married Tony Stark before revealing herself as a traitor.
