Rowling announces Pottermore" /> Over the past few weeks Harry Potter fans have been wondering what ‘Pottermore’ is all about. A website launched which gave no further details, only owls, but it was made clear that Pottermore was not a new Harry Potter book.

Well today a big revealing took place at the Victoria and Albert Museum in Kensington, central London, and Rowling said the site would be an online experience to read, interact with and share the Harry Potter stories. She also revealed the details in a YouTube announcement.

The Telegraph have quotes from Rowling regarding what Pottermore actually involves, and why it came about:

She said: ”I wanted to give something back to the fans that have followed Harry so devotedly over the years, and to bring the stories to a new digital generation. ”I hope fans and those new to Harry will have as much fun helping to shape Pottermore as I have.

”Just as I have contributed to the website, everyone else will be able to join in by submitting their own comments, drawings and other content in a safe and friendly environment – Pottermore has been designed as a place to share the stories with your friends as you journey through the site.”

Fans will be able to work their way through the books and follow Harry to Hogwarts where they are sorted into one of the school’s rival houses and become student wizards themselves. The website, which is part social-networking forum and part computer game, allows fans to access material cut from the original books and read insights from the author along the way. Rowling said the idea partly came because of the demand for eBooks of the novels.

She said: ”I wanted to pull it back to reading, I wanted to pull it back to the literary experience, the story experience and this is what emerged.” She said some of the material for the website had been ”literally” dug out of boxes. She said: ”The world has kind of out-stripped me in the sense that back in 1998 I knew I was generating a lot more material than would ever appear in the books. ”To me at the time I thought ‘Who would ever want to know the significance of all these different wand woods?’ ”This was all in my head. So at that time the only way I could imagine ever putting that material out there was in the form of a printed book.”

She added fans might still see the publication of a Harry Potter encyclopedia, with all profits going to charity, but she would not publish another novel. She said: ”This was about the give-back. The technology now existed to do something outside the books and the films for existing fans.”

Fans will be able to register from today for an online challenge on the website on July 31 with one million people who successfully beat the challenge being invited to join Pottermore early. The website will open to all in October.

Read similar posts to J.K. While many expected Deathly Hallows to be the last book, Rowling recently revealed in an interview that she could definitely write more books as she has all the characters and their futures in her head, but she’s done. For now.

From CNN:

“I could definitely write an eighth, ninth, tenth,” the celebrated author, 45, told Oprah Winfrey during an interview. “I’m not going to say I won’t. I don’t think I will … I feel I am done, but you never know.”

As a fan of the books and the movies I wouldn’t be against more stories from Rowling. There would obviously be a demand for it, and she could easily pick off from where Deathly Hallows left off 19 years after Hogwarts. She could potentially start a whole new saga with Harry’s children, or continue with Harry, Ron and Hermione as adults facing a new threat to the Wizarding World. J.K Rowling obviously knows which direction she would go with future books, but as she said, she’s “done” for now. Maybe in another 10 years?

Read similar posts to J.K Rowling “could definitely write an 8th, 9th, and 10th” Harry Potter book on Filmonic

J.K. I had a couple of people to help me, and a winch. The secret can be out now. I met Jo Rowling for the first time at a big awards dinner. (Sorry to everyone who just had a mild heart-attack!) And it’s squeezed onto the front and back of an A5 sheet of paper (slightly bigger than a postcard). Jo was asked to take part in the charity event, which will benefit the writers’ association English PEN and Dyslexia Action charities, along with twelve other authors and illustrators.

The short story will be viewable online and at the Waterstones stores (UK) starting tomorrow, June 11.
